BX won\'t start!

I washed her down last night after a hard day of raking (with the engine running).....no problems. I then pulled her into the garage. I realized I needed some light, turned the key and tried to turn on the rear lights I rigged up on.....nothing happened. So I thought there must be some wet circuits or something like that. I then tried to start her up to see if that would make a difference....nothing. Not only would the lights not turn on, the engine would not and still will not stay running. It starts with a quick burst of fuel, but then immediately dies! I tried adding some more throttle and that didn't work. The strange thing is if I keep the key turned for a few seconds it will run while the key is turned (don't want to hurt the starter) but then die as soon as the key returns? Any ideas?

Re: BX won\'t start!

I had an old Dodge that did the same thing when the ballast resistor went bad but I'm pretty sure your BX doesn't have that or points, plugs or plug wires. I would bet its a wiring or connection problem at your ignition switch, since it seems like you're getting no power in the "on" position.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Let me clarify....it does get power to the "standard" lights, just not the light I added to her last winter. Factory lights work fine, all systems seem to be go, then it won't stay running!

Re: BX won\'t start!

Jim, it sounds like you may have blown the fuel solenoid fuse, have a look at that. May also want to check if it's on the same circuit you rigged the lights to. The reason it wants to run in the starter position is the solenoid is being powered by the starter at this time through the initial pull coil in the solenoid. The hold coil is not getting power.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Did you rig your new lights so they only run when the ignition switch is "ON"? Get your ohmmeter and see if you have a break in the loop you added. If it runs off "START" but not off the "ON" position, you may have an open circuit or a bad ground in your added wiring.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Kubmech, I'll check that fuse out. It should be clearly marked (aside from being blown :) That sounds like a distinct possibility, considering what you've said and they way it is behaving. --I rigged the light to the rear AUX open circuit that runs under the seat. Normally the lights will turn on with the turn of the key along with the rest of the lights.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Kub,

--Still won't start and no fuses are blown. At least the ones I can see. Do you know of any hidden fuses that might control the fuel supply. I sent a similar private message.

Thanks, Jim

Re: BX won\'t start!

Hey Jim, I was lookin' for you but for some reason I lost where you were posting. Anyway, should'nt be any hidden fuses. If you look on the right side of the engine just behind the injection pump you will find the fuel solenoid. The harness coming out of it should have a white wire from the starter and one or two other wires can't remeber the colors. One will be ground for the solenoid and the other will be power for the hold coil. The white lead powers the pull coil and we already know that's working. Turn your key to the run position and see if you have power to either of the other two leads. If you do then the other one is ground. Make sure the ground lead is good. If all that checks out then it's a failed hold coil and you will need a new solenoid. If you don't have power there then you'll have to work your way back to find where the open in the circuit is.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Did you check the 20 amp fuse on the key switch side?
Connected to red/white and red/black wires. If good, pull the connector from the engine stop solenoid and measure the voltage between the red/black and red wires. Should be battery voltage. If not, wire or switch is bad.

Looks like I was typing slow as Kubmuch beat me to it.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Sounds like a bad ignition switch to me. May have got some water in it and shorted it out. I have repaired many kubotas that had the same senerio and the ign. switch was the problem.

Re: BX starts!

She runs! I did check the fuse.......but I checked it again and magically it was blown! Changed the fuse with a slightly larger one because that's all I had at the time (25 AMP). Thanks, Jim

Re: BX won\'t start!

Kub,

She runs. As I said in another post....the fuse was blown. It was really hard to see without a bright light. I put a 25 AMP fuse in, cuz that's all I had. Do you think that's going to be a problem? Maybe I should just get a 20 AMP and be done with it.

Thanks, Jim

Re: BX won\'t start!

Jim, put the 20 back in as soon as you get a chance. That's just the right way to do it. Hopefully it was just an isolated incident and you won't have anymore problems. Just keep in mind fuses blow for a reason. What color wire did you tap into for the lights, may be related.

Re: BX won\'t start!

Kub,

Thanks, I'll get a 20 tomorrow. I just fired it up to make sure that was definitely the problem and then shut it down less than a minute later.

I used the AUX wire (under the seat) for the lights. I believe this is the wire to use for lights.

Glad she's running again. I was starting to get worried.
