BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

I was using my bota all day cleaning out a greenbelt using the hoe to grab piles of branches and dragging them to a burn area. Ran the machine about six hours no problem. I had it set up to use the backhoe to push a tree I was cutting. I had the chain saw running and I had a helmet with hearing protection on. I saw "white smoke" and heard the bota sputter. I ran over and can't remember if it shut down or if I shut it down. But it won't start. I have 125 hours on the machine and all the maintenance has been done religiously. I will try starting it in the morning. I had to leave for Boy Scout meeting. Any info will be appreciated. Good thing it's under warranty. The wife is not happy as I told her Kubota is a very reliable machine and you usually pay for what you get.
Thanks,

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

Out of fuel????????????

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

MikeLad61,
1.Out of fuel (sounds dumb but just to be sure)?
2. Overheated?
They will pop a little smoke if they are out of fuel (I guess enough fuel being injected to make a little smoke but not enough to fire the mixture).
Good luck and keep us posted on what happens.
BTW, welcome to TBN.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

No the fuel is ok. IN fact I filled up about one hour before this happened. I thought maybe I had water or a bad patch of diesel fuel so this morning I drained the tank and both fuel filters and primed the system to no avail. The motor turns over but it just doesn't seem to get any diesel. I at my wits end and I'm about to phone the dealer. Thanks for the help and I'll let everyone know what happens.
Happpy Easter,
Mike

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

Well I called the Pine Bush Equipment and left a message on voice mail. I no sooner finish leaving the message and the phone rang. The service manager Bob was returning my call. I let him know I purchased my bota out of State. He had no problem with that. He did inform me after bring him up to speed about my problem that there would be a service fee if they came out. He believed the problem was fuel related. Either I ran out of fuel or a clog had cause the bota to run out of fuel. They had a mechanic at my house in half an hour. He cracked the flare nuts on top of the injectors to bleed out any air, except there was no fuel. We took off the front guard and bonnet to access the motor. He checked the electrical to the fuel solenoid and it was getting power. When he did a visual inspection of the fuel solenoid he noticed a bulge in the back plate. He said the solenoid looks like it overheated. Sure enough he started the bota up by bypassing it. Unfortunately, PBE didn’t have one in stock. This part was a first for the mechanic and the parts guy on a BX-22. The part should be in Monday and with the Easter weekend I won’t be getting any seat time anyway.
Thanks for in help and Happy Easter,
Mike

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

mike,
Sounds like the fuel solenoid coil had a bad spot in the wire insulation and shorted (or some such). Good to hear that it was not something major. BTW, how did he bypass the solenoid if it was burned open?? Sounds like a good thing to know should the need arise.
good luck,
DaveL

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

He took it out and ran the bota without it. The solenoid has a plunger on it in that sticks out and hits something inside the injector pump. He was willing to set it up to run and told me to shut it off all I would have to do is move either the governor or speed control lever. He would also have to cut the plunger off so no contact inside the injector pump would take place. I thanked him and told him I didn't need to use the bota that badly. I was worried about warranty issues. My luck something else would go and the warranty issue pops up.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

Well I think I have the same problem. Was fertilizing the lawn and the tractor just died. Fuel was between ¼ and empty. I figure it ran out of fuel. Fill it up, NO LUCK. It runs when you turn the key, as long as I hold the key it will run, as soon as I let go it stops! Checked the PTO and shifter, they are OK I can get it not turn over when they are in the wrong position. SOOOO what do you think?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Tractor has 106 hours on it. The dealer is 2 hours away I am sure he is up to his eyeballs with work. AND I just fertilized the lawn, you know what I will need to do in about 5 days. AND off on a business trip this PM for 3 days AND the tarctor is at the back of the property. If I put it in N can I pull the tractor? Gee first the wrong blades on the deck and now this, who did I piss off??

When it rains it pours /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

You might have to bleed the fuel system.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

Are you having a bad week or what??????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Can you locate and inspect the solenoid? I am guessing that the solenoid is powered to open and allow fuel flow soooooooo...........
If you or someone you know has an ohmmeter or battery powered test light, you could go from the solenoid connection (pull the solenoid wire off first) to the frame to check continuity. If the ohmmeter shows a low resistance (probably 20-200??? ohm range) or the test light lights you probably have a good solenoid. If you have a higher reading or no test light, its probably open and needs to be replaced. If you can get a voltmeter (VOM or digital DMM) you can also check to see if voltage is being supplied by the solenoid wire with the key on. If no power is supplied, look at bad fuses, fusible links, etc.
hope this helps,
DaveL

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

I am not sure if I understand this correctly. But you say when you hold the key it will run and then let go it will stop? Well if this is the same thing that my L35 did it was actually the key switch connections had a short in it and when you took the pressure up or down it would run then stall like you went and shut if down. I think you need to look at the key switch. I would just push the whole key upward not turning it to the crank position just pushing pressure up by grabbing the key and prying up. Hope this helps. Keep us up to date. Goodluck.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

If it's the fuel solenoid you should be able to pull or push the plunger to open or close the valve. You may have to disconect the power to the solenoid .
Drove my truck for a week or so with a bum solenoid. Had to turn off the key, lift the hood and move the solenoid plunger to shut it off. The real good news was it was a mere $600.00 item to replace.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

I called the dealer for help and he said to check the fuse. I did tonight after being out of town for 3 days and sure enough the 20 amp fuse was blown. Replaced it with the spare use and it fired up and ran OK. It was late so I just put it in the shed.

Sooo any idea what would cause the fuse to blow? I went and got a few replacements.

Thanks in advance.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

Glad for you it was a simple fix.
Sometimes vibration will weaken the fuse element until normal loading can open the fuse. If it fired right up after replacement it was either a bad fuse or its an intermittent problem. I wouldn't get worried unless it does it again.
Good luck.

Re: BX-22 White Smoke won\'t run

NY Yankees Fan,
Glad it was a quick fix. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Your week will get better. I have no idea about the fuse blowing but if it continues you might have an electrical problem.

I wouldn't get worried unless it does it again.

I wouldn't worry about it, either, but if it *does* happen again don't let the dealer blow you off. Electrical problems are almost always hard to figure out and you do not want to have to pay to have it diagnosed and fixed. Make your dealer find the root cause and fix it.

But it is also quite likely that it was an isolated incident, so don't fret about it. Glad you got your tractor fixed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
