I would like to add a couple of 100W driving lites to the top of my ROPS for better lighting when the bucket is up in front of the headlights at night, but they would draw 16.7 amps of current at 12V, and I doubt that the little dinky alternator on my BX-22 can put out that much. I've heard a rumor that there is a heavy duty alternator kit available. Does anyone know anything about it? Where I can get one? or what it costs?

well now I feel stupid because I found another thread on this topic. Sorry. I also just found out today that my local kubota dealer is out of business because of health reasons -- he must be dying of cancer or something -- really sad. Anyway, I'm looking to order the kit over the internet if possible.

Instead of upgrading your alternator and installing 100 watt lamps, have you considered just using 55 watt floods? I put two of 'em (from Wally World) on my BX22 and they give off a good bit of light.

That would still draw 9 amps, and I have already added an AM/FM/Cassette radio and speakers (they hang off the sides of the rops) which pulls several amps, so I think if I had the radio, lites, and extra lights on, that the factory alternator/magneto which I'm told only puts out 14 amps, would not be able to handle the load.

Mike, you are correct, it will not handle the load with all that stuff you want to run. It is a shame that Kubota puts such small alternators on their tractors, but I suppose the reality is that 90% of their customers never put more lights on the tractors so it really doesn't matter. I'd recommend you upgrade by following the link Henro provided.

2 55watt lamps are going to draw about 9.2 amps, it is likely that your headlamps are 55 watt units. I can't say what the radio draws, but I suspect it is maybe 1 or 2 amps? Then you have the running lamps, those are going to draw another 3 or 4, so you are already drawing roughly 14 or 15 amps.

Toss on 2 more 100watt lights and you are adding roughly 17 more amps onto your system.

Normally I don't think it is a big deal to draw slightly more than the alternator can recharge for occasional usage because the run time is likely to be fairly short. But as you are looking at roughly doubling the draw on your system, that leaves only the option of upgrading the alternator.

Thanks. I've got a degree in electronic engineering, so I've built a relay circuit or two... :)

> Why couldn't you run any alternator that will mount up and run off the fan belt?

You could, provided that it was physically the right size and had the correct pulley size. But there is not much clearance in there so rather than buy one that may not fit I prefer to go with one designed to fit this tractor. Someone else posted photos in this forum of the upgrade and if you look at the clearance it's not much.

I decided to add 5 new lites to the rops, with 3 facing forward
and 2 facing backward for the hoe. I'll post some photos once I get it done. Didn't want to mess with trying to swivel the lites as they would have to be loose and probably vibrate.

Interesting note on pricing. If you buy 55W Halogen driving lights for a car, they are as much as $150 a set, but if you buy55W Halogen tractor lites (same exact H3 bulb) they are $17 each from
