John Deere 790 w/ FEL & 5' brushhog. 64' MF 65 w/ 7' brushhog
i could use some advice, not so much invoking brand debates, but rather tractor size and HP. i have 10+ acres of hills woods and some meadow. will want to be able to get thru my unimproved woods to clear some trails. but also will be bush hogging a few acres of the meadow. both of these tractors have FEL,and MFWD, the Kubota has hydro trans. i was leaning toward the smaller Kubota because of its footprint thru the woods, but wonder how much dif the xtra HP of the JD will make in the future. i don't do hay or plow, just mowing and occasional tree removal, snow clearing. either of these will be an improvement over my 64 MF65. thanks for you input! i've enjoyed reading these forums the past few days gearing up for my purchase! btw they are close to same price, kubota has 93 hrs and JD 400 hrs. jet7271

If the choice is between a manual trans or a hydro trans, it would be a manual for me.

I could fix a manual if needed, hydro trannys baffle me.

Check my 790 in photobucket link.

IMO, you should buy the tractor with more HP. If you have it you won't complain about not having it if you need it. I bought a small Case B24E a few years ago and found out the hard way it is almost too small to accomplish much work. It has a 24 HP 3 cyl diesel which works well, but it has the small sub-compact tires which limits what I can do with it. If you have 10 acres, you may want more power since you can use more implements designed for your needs. I'm stuck trying to find small cat 1 implements.

I've got a B7610 about the same as the 2320 and for about a year had a loaner Sato 670D (about 30hp).

Check the specs - on TractorData they report the JD as only lifting 816lbs at the 3pt, while the Kubota is reported as Rear lift (at 24"/610mm): 1,058 lbs.

However the Kubota has about 10 less HP at the PTO.

I did a bunch of tree/log moving and having the extra 200lbs of lift capacity would be good.

Normally I'd say go for bigger but here bigger may not be better.

Hey thx much for input and advice. After some seat time on both at the dealer's, i opted for the JD w/ 30 hp. I was too eager to take ownership, and didnt want to wait til delivery the next day, so i drove it the 8 miles home. First modification when i got home was to mount a rearview mirror on the canopy. I love this tractor! I will be visiting this forum lots, trolling for advice.
