Seeders Buying Herd Seeder

The absolute best broadcast seeder/spreader I've ever used is from VICON. You won't get one for $500 though.

The Herd seeder is extremely accurate with grass seed. There are broadcast seeders that'll spread fertilizer, ect, and do just as good of a job, but when it comes to spreading small seed, Herd takes a back seat to few if any.

Try Sweet farm equipment in Mundfordville Kentucky. Ken Sweet WAS an active TBN board member for quite a while. I haven't seen much of him of late though. He has M96's listed on his website for $450. Site hasn't been updated in some time, so it may be an old price. He ships too. Might be worth a shot.

I found an old M96 in the barn cleaned it up and looking forward to using it. Called Herd for some advice and David? Herd walked me through what I needed to rejuvenate it. Mine is probably 40 years old he said.

It's made in america, no junky made in china crap

it's made out of real iron and steel
this seeder will still be around in 40 years
You'll only have to buy it once.

shipping shouldn't be that much, it's not that big.

The pattern is fantasic (and adjustable)

I do lots of acres on many different places, it's my business.
I'm not buying anything but Herd for seeders going forward.

Their website says suggested retail price is $441, not $500 for an M96. You definately want to add on the lid.

worth every penny if you ask me.

The $500 was with shipping since they said it would be around $50 to ship it to Pa.

Glad to see this post. I have been reading about seeders this afternoon/evening and need a little clarification on them, as the Herd website does not describe the features in great detail. My needs are primarily for deer food plots (currently...about 5 acres).

1. Will the Herd Seeder handle little seeds like clover nearly as well as a hand seeder (such as the Solo or Earthway)?

2. How well can you control the width of the broadcast?? Part of the areas I want to clover seed are woodland trails about 12 to 15 feet in width....and much of the seeders merits are on the high width that can be broadcast...little on the control of the width.

3. How is the width of the broadcast controlled? by the PTO driven disc's RPM? or by a shield? or?

4. IF I do not intend to use the seeder for fertilizer too, are one of the better ATV electric powered seeders a good option?

Prior to reading about the Herd seeder, I had resigned myself to using a good hand-crank seeder. But walking the trails and turning a crank doesn't appeal to me the same as driving. :D

Thanks for any advice.

The Herd seeders are far ahead of the crowd when it comes to ACCURATELY spreading small seed. They rank amongst the best in that catagory. Width of broadcast would be controlled by pto speed (and that, by ENGINE speed) Rate (lbs per acre) is controlled by a combination of PTO speed and GROUND speed) My Herd F-160 has a PTO/GROUND speed chart on the spreader. I would assume all models of Herd spreaders do same. (F-160 is a now discontinued model. It's essentially the same as the M96, only with a MUCH larger hopper) I have no personal experience with the electric seeders, but I have heard they do an excellent job.

How large is the hopper on the F-160?

You can get an extension kit for the Herd M-96 if capacity is an issue. I believe it gives you an additional 2 bushels.
