Bush Hog Deck Repair

Darly, yeah, having fun amusing my self as usual.
But lets get back to the best way to do something,,that just all depends doesn't it?I mean he could blast the whole hog,,cut out any badly rusted spots,,do it like you said,,reprime it and paint it,,,now that would be really doing it right, right? Or he could just roughly cut out a piece of steel, fling it down over hole and put a few large tacks on it,,that would fix his problem, wouldn't it?
So you see, doing something right, depends on what you're trying to accomplish,,,if he wants to overhaul his rusted up hog and try and make it new,he might wanta go into it one way,,but if he just wanted to plug hole up,he might go into it another way,,,both ways could be considered doing it right,,,its just my opinion a rusted up hog ain't worth much effort fixing up a little hole, thats all, don't know how the poster feels about it,but if he wanted hole patched he could done it my way by the time I typed this.

That door to open and sharpen blades from top,,now that sounds like an idea,,,maybe he could enlarge existing hole,,make a little door,,weld a couple of hinges on it,make somekinda latch,,now that might be worth the time,,
,,thingy

My 5ft cutter deck has a few holes in it and I am thinking about re-skinning
the damaged areas with 1/8 steel plate. The question is....do I weld the new sheet over the top of damaged areas or not???

Is there any issue with layering the sheets in this manner???

Thanks in advance.

Its not good to over lay the metal it will collect moisture between the two layers and rust out as well

If you did lay the plate over the other it will rust out your new plate faster just because it will hold moisture between the both

I don't want to get into this "right way, acceptable way, RIGHT way" arguement. I have it enough with my wife!

She does auto body work as a hobby :)thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:) and she is a perfectionist. Have seen her redo work until it is perfect - no matter how long it takes..... Not a big deal since it is a hobby - if it takes a week/month/year, not a big deal. We usually don't NEED the item done on a time schedule.

I am usually more of a "good enough for the intended purpose" guy. I can't see spending 100 hours of prep on a clapped out Chevy Vega (are there any of those still around?!?!?!) for a $200.00 paint job.

I kind of agree with Thingy - there are varying degrees of "right way" and "good enough".....

But back to the original question of welding plate overlapping the hole..... Clean to bare strong metal and coat the area (both sides) well with a weld-through primer Weld the patch on. There is an automotive product called seam sealer - get a can of that and seal the hole to prevent water intrusion. Hardens enough to take the abrasion and also will seal any remaining pinholes and keep water and air out. Not as elegant, but you could also use roofing tar/cement instead....

The RIGHT way (the way my wife would do it...) would be to cut the patch to fit the hole with no overlap. If this is going to be a trailer queen show bushhog, I would definitely do it that way! If your bushhog gets as dented and banged up as mine does, the overlapping patch will last until the next repair is needed, and get you back out in the field cutting sooner. I would do it quick and dirty.

What you do depends on your needs and time/skills. But since my wife is ALWAYS right,I would grudgingly do it her way!!!
