I was wondering if anybody else has had the same issue I had with my 285...

Long story short, I finally found out yesterday that you have to cut Clockwise with this mower (or at least mine you do anyway). The blades on mine spin Counter clockwise and throws the grass to the left. If you try to cut in the counter clockwise direction, grass builds up under the skid on the right side of the cutter and causes it to cut very un even and trashy looking.

So if anyone is having cut quality issues with their 285, cut moving in the clockwise direction and you'll see a night and day difference. I've had my cutter for about a year now and am just figuring this out.. Yeah, I feel stupid!

After figuring it out, it's simple to understand now.

This is my theory:
If the blades on your rotary cutter spin in the counter clockwise direction when the PTO is engaged, you should drive the tractor in the clockwise direction to get the best cut quality. Try it. It works.

I am glad you solved your problem. On the two Woods RFM's that I have owned I could never tell that it made a difference on which direction I mowed. I determine direction by what gives me the best view of what's going on around me while I am mowing.
