I dont want to 'beat a dead horse' about stump removal. But I have a few that I have 'salted' a year ago, and remember someone saying something about a washer machine ove rthe stump when you burn it.
I assume that the washer either needs some air holes in the base, or whatever to get a draft.
Ive also read to soak diesel fuel into it prier to lighting it.But either way My question is to ask if the washer is to create a draft effect and keep it burning.
Thanks.
Allan

Bedlam,
I don't know about a washing machine but digging a burn pit under the stump sill speed up the process. Adding a pipe with a fan forcing air down it into the flames will do a good job of speeding up the burn as well.
I didn't read the post about putting a washing machine over a burning stump but am having a chuckle visualizing it.
I pay a guy $10 a stump to grind mine about 18 inches below grade. I usually have about 10 done at a time, he charges more per stump for less than ten

Getting a large stump to burn is a particularly unrewarding process. I've thrown huge oak stumps on raging bonfires for hours and other than a little singed when they come out, they are none the worst for wear. Pine stumps do actually burn for me sometimes,

Good luck Andy

Instead of a washing machine, my brother and I used a 55 gallon barrel with both ends cut out. But even after soaking with diesel, it's a slow process; at least for an oak stump. I was in a United Rentals place yesterday and happened to notice a stump grinder there, so I asked about the rental and the lady said it's $125 a day; another $10 a day if you need their little equipment trailer to haul it, plus sales tax of 8.25%, of course.

I've got a couple stumps one's about 2 1/2 feet across the other a foot and a half across,(got a whole bunch the backhoe can handle) my father's got one about 15 feet from his front door that's got to be at least 4 1/2 feet across. If i ever rent a grinder, I'll try to do his first. He refuses to consider burning it, well it is right in front of the house..
