Burn Barrels

Try to find a Mom & Pop local "diner". We've got 3 within a few miles of us, that have great food, large portions and are cheaper than fast food places. (esp Wendy's)

I tried the 55 gallon metal barrels to burn but they lasted about a year and I couldn't put big boxes in them without having to put labor in cutting them down.
Now I have the XXL size burn barrel made out of 11 gauge steel from Proud Pyro. It's expensive but can hold large items.
I had bought the 14 ga burn barrel from them but it only lasted 3 years before rusting through. My fault for not cleaning it out and the ash holding water after a rain.
Now I use the concrete patio deck blocks to raise the sides. I don't attach one of the sides and put the trash through that instead having to remove the heavy lid each time.

I got my last barrel free a couple of years ago. There are some nearby on Marketplace for $4. It's hard to make paying $650 for one, fiscally responsible. If I have a lot to burn, I have a brush pile like Shawn.

Agreed. But seems like the best "local" places around here have folded up in the last several years. We don't even have any good places left to go sit down and have breakfast nearby. Sad.

They can be good, they can be awful. There are a couple near me that were highly recommended, I thought the food was mediocre at best, portions were on the skimpy side and the service not much better. YMMV. Agree with CH4Ohio that these places seem to be a dying breed, much like mom & pop sandwich shops. As the older generations retire, not many come to take their place.

I made a burn barrel out of a 275 gallon oil tank. Cut about a foot and a half square opening in the side, about midway, stood it on end, left a piece of pipe on the other end that actually acted like a chimney. The oil residue made for a good burn the first time that I used it.

And 45 acp will not penetrate a steel 55 gal drum barrel. 5.56 Nato ball will go through one side, but 7.62 Nato ball will go through both sides. So for "efficiency" I use my M-1A.

.357 Magnum leaves a nice big hole in both sides.

I agree to a point. $650 is a lot of money but because my land consists of majority trees this burn barrel keeps refuse contained even during a burn ban.
I might end up investing in a large incinerator given how much trash we burn.

There's the cost for the barrels and also a dozen .45 rounds to make the air inlets. Those are getting expensive too.

Drums come in different grades of thickness. I had to procure drums for waste disposal for the last place I worked. What caliber shoots thru one guys drum may not the others.

I think burn barrels are illegal here (SC) too. But you wouldn't know it from looking around in the sticks. Pretty common.

Where my place is the public convenience center is about 5 miles away and not open every day.

So I burn whatever I need or want to in a large fire pit when it isn't too dry or windy. Nearest neighbors are nearly a mile either direction. I have seen purpose made burn barrels for sale and have heard they are expensive but efficient. Have never researched it.

I do think it would be bad to have a neighbor always burning nasty stuff near by. But that kind of neighbor is going to be the type that throws Bud Light cans out the truck window and keeps a dog outside on a chain even in when its freezing cold. You know the type.
