Bunk Beds can be dangerous

We had bunk beds. The mattresses sagged a fair bit in the center because of the way it was supported with steel straps and springs. It sort of created a hammock effect. I always figured that was part of the design to keep you away from the edge. I don't recall anyone ever falling out except the time our dog heard a noise in the middle of the night and jumped off the top bunk to investigate. Bark, bark, thump.

First and only time I ever slept in a bunk bed was when I was in the army,got top bunk,never fell out.

You need to get back on that horse,put a motor cycle helmet on,and just go with it.

We used to have tripple high bunks at the cabin. One night b/4 the opening day off deer season, my uncle after an evening of imbibing some adult beverages decided to answer nature's call 'bout 3am and failed to remember where he was. We all awoke to the sound of an old ladderback chair being turned into kindling. Fortunately he imbibed enough of the aformentioned beverages that the only thing he damaged was his pride.

When we added the bedroom we rigged two high bunks and an open loft above...

I built a loft bed for my son from an idea I got out of a catalog. The bed itself is about 5 foot off the floor. It has a play area underneath. At the foot end of the bed is a latter facing out into the room. At the head end of the bed is a slide facing out into the room. There is a guardrail in between the ladder and the slide and on the other side is the wall. I thought the setup was fairly safe.

My son was about 5 years old when I first built the bed. One night, not long after he started sleeping in it we heard a thump. We knew the thump came from his room so we went to investigate. Upon turning on the light we see our son sitting in the middle of the floor with a bewildered look, unharmed. Seems he somehow managed to wiggle around enough to make his way to the head of the bed and come down the slide. He's 13 now and that was the first and last time he came off unintentionally.

Just another quick bunk bed warning... If you do happen to put in bunk beds, be sure to check the clearance to the nearest ceiling fan. My cousin had a bunk bed in his room (not sure why since he was the only one in the room) and he slept on the top bunk. Because of the size of the room, there was no position in the room where the bed completely cleared overlapping with the ceiling fan. It was a ceiling hugger fan so the blades were roughly 24-36" from the bed and the overlap with the bed was only about 3 inches at the foot of the bed so it normally wasn't a problem. Then my cousin and his sister decided to switch rooms but not move the beds. She was older and therefore taller. Middle of the night the first night she slept on the top bunk my aunt and uncle get woken up by a scream, a thud and another scream.... My cousin was sleeping the wrong way on the top bunk, was going to get up and go to the bathroom but forgot about the ceiling fan. Fortunately it was on low that night, but it gave her a pretty good gash across the forehead and caused her to fall off the top bunk. I think she ended up with a broken wrist in addition to about 5 stitches on her forehead.

She traded rooms back pretty quick after that.
