Building our retirement home

I really like that Hackett stone. I never thought of the dual layer insulation. Best of both worlds. Foam for added barrier sealing, and cellulose for it's quieting properties (beside the insulatory properties).

Plan is to seal the cedar with a natural color stain.

We have lots to do ... I've almost finished the interior painting, just 2 bedrooms and a few closets remain. All the windows and doors are oak - needing to be stained. The vault ceiling will also be oak t&g, about 2200 sq ft of surface area, to be stained. Then we'll have all the interior trim to worry about.

The costs for painting & staining all of this were going to be astronomical. We decided to do it ourselves. The trade-off is it takes a very long time.

Welcome back! thanks for the pictures.

When this owl showed up I thought it was pretty neat to have her hanging around the house. A few days later, I discover she had managed to get into my vaulted ceiling insulation and start a nest. Her house manners were not well developed :) Let's just say she had bathroom issues. Wound up buying a good quality filter mask and tearing out a dozen R38 insulation batts to rid the ceiling of her "business."

Just as an FYI: bird feces can be VERY dangerous - even deadly. On some occasions, inhaling particles can create a non-treatable lung infection. I know one man who died from this.

Yeah, histoplasmosis. I have a friend who's father died from it, too. Got it working in a warehouse with TONS of pigeon droppings. :(

I had a pair of owls just like the one you posted who took up residency in my barn while building. Thought is was cool, but glad when I finally got the big doors installed.

I started reading this thread yesterday, and since the start of the thread was over a year l looked forward to reading through the whole thing and in the end I would see the finished home. Groan, thinking of all that staining yet to do. You'll get there though, you'll get there. Yes the first home we built we did all the paining and staining, for the second home we just paid the cost and had it done. Whole home painting and staining is a project I think you only do once in life ha-ha-ha. Thanks for sharing, it is fun to watch your beautiful home rise from the ground.

Just recently found time to come back to TBN for awhile. Thought I would add a few pics to this old thread.

The house is about 99.99% complete!! It seems there's always some little thing remaining.

Most recently, I etched the garage floors and put down a textured finish.

Here are just a couple of random pics I have handy. The colors in the basement gameroom and theater are much richer in person - but the camera really struggles to get it right.20181222_180305_resized.jpg20190729_114442_resized.jpg20190729_114501_resized.jpg20190729_114623_resized.jpg20190729_114703_resized.jpg

Very nice. Love the wall art on the hallway wall. Not sure about Bambi watching me shower though. :D

Curious about the black framed door to the left of the sink, it looks very heavy duty. Secure door?

Yes - triple bolt steel door. That is the entry to our theater room. It serves as a safe room. While the attached game room area has a traditional ceiling between floors - the safe/game room is solid 8" reinforced concrete around/below/above. It also has its own bathroom w/shower :)
