Glad to hear that my work experience (translating steps to fix computer problems into very basic steps for people who know little about computers and/or are afraid of them) can be useful on here.

Should I be mad at you? :confused2:

Yeah, I pointed out the downspout issue to the builder. He said the gutter guys never connect them to drains. The other issue (not clear in the angle of the shot) is they they installed oversize gutters instead of regular ones as they were told, so they need to use special adapters to make them connect to the drain pipes. Good deal for mom as that would have been a $1000 up charge if we had requested it. :)

As for the equipment that will go in the rack, it will be the following:

  • A/V Receiver (probably recycle the one she has now as it already features HDMI switching for 3 sources, might be 2, will have to check)
  • Direct TV HD DVR (free when they do the install)
  • HTPC - will need to build a new one to replace her mid size tower monster she has now
  • Blu-ray player
  • Audio amp for other zones (She already has a Yamaha amp for this)
Not everything is rack mountable, but I got several of those Mid-Atlantic rack shelves for those items. I'll then use filler plates as needed to seal up any unused rack units. Today she got a bunch of different sized internal and external HDs scattered between her office PC and mid tower PC for audio and video storage. Will likely consolidate all those into a storage server in the office, or make the office PC the file server for everything. With the demise of WHS, perhaps I'll upgrade mom to Windows 8 and run Storage Spaces, that lets you manage multiple hard drives as one virtual drive.

Hmm, now that I think about it, her current method of switching between sources, let alone zone is pretty bad, so I'll probably look into upgrading the AV receiver to something with multiple zones, but to get one that can stream HDMI audio from the HTPC cost real money. All the entry level AV receivers can only stream analog audio to other zones. Anyway, we're probably getting way off topic for at least another 3 weeks. :D

All Ethernet will be home run to the office where I'll have a small switch and AP (Wireless Access Point).

I am impressed...My mother has not even got to the black electrical tape to cover the flashing 12:00 on her microwave

Peter,
I'm a bit confused about the width of the fireplace brick/stone.

Are the electric boxes going to be on the plasterboard surface or will they be extended to the stone surface?

On the gutters, I would imagine they are one piece seamless, bent there with a machine in the truck?
Are the gutters oversized too?
Must be if it would have been a $1k upcharge. 2 x 3 downspouts are about $9 and 3 x 4 are $13. Labor to install is the same in both.
You will have to wait and see, but the large amount of water that will come down the valley into the courtyard may do just that without a deflector
in the 90 degree corner. That volume of water may need two downspouts on that run, one on each end. (That's a wait and see, but put it on your check list )

The stone on the fireplace wall will be narrow like your first photo. The painters will be extending the blue paint accordingly.

Yes, the gutters are oversize as well, and one piece. $1k up charge still seems steep, but at least we won't have to pay for it. I agree that even with the larger gutters, there may be issues in the 90 degree corner. Will find out soon enough I'm sure!

Trim is supposed to be in tomorrow. Builder did say he trained all his guys how to do everything, so the same guys that did the framing will probably end up doing the finish trim. I'm a little scared by that remark...

Peter,
That is scary:(

I would make sure before they start on any baseboard that they know how to, and will use "coped" joints on all inside corners.

Plasterboard corners are rarely square after the mud coats are done. If they just use a miter saw and cut the corners at 45 degrees each board they won't fit together right and after a while will separate.

A good coped joint takes a bit longer to cut but since the end with the profile fits against the face of the other piece you get a tight seam that stays that way.

Jay,
That deer is going to get fat on all that popcorn.
I've got 11 of those rascals running around here waiting for the garden and my wife to plant flowers.
She has to go around every evening squirting the flowers with a homemade concoction of garlic, soured milk,
and other stinkin goodies to keep them from eating all the flowers. We put a 7' high deer net all around the garden.
So, if you want some more deer, your welcome to ours.
I'll trade you even for a big box of "Georgia red wigglers"

I'm jealous, dammmit. :D

I do happen to have a very sweet little furry critter that swmbo brought home about 12 hours ago, though. :D

Anyone familiar with my recent thread regarding my heartbreaking #$@#@$ will have a good guess.

That's great news. What breed is it?
