Just realized something we have in common. You say you are a stay at home dad. I am too. I've been a work at home dad for three years now. What a blessing it is.

The ground looks really nice that you tilled. Any chance for some pics of it in operation? I've never used one, and I'm not sure if it's on my list of things to buy or not, but I am curious about them.

We must be on the same wavelength... Not the entire property but used my tiller the same way as you yesterday. Spread some Fescue and transplanted some fescue sod. Worked very well I think!

Did you cover your seed? I have not yet. Was thinking of going back over (maybe slightly higher) with tiller. Thoughts?

Michael, I guess we're hitting the right window then if we're both doing it at the same time! Now where's all that rain we had in the last few weeks?

I went over mine with a hand rake to cover the seed. I thought about passing through with the tiller after spreading seed, but I'm not confident that I can keep a consisent enough depth and don't want to end up with seed deeper than an inch. As is, at least half of mine is pretty much at the surface still.

I've got to run...any minute now, scgargoyle is showing up here at the house. Another story of TBN blossuming a friendship. If I can talk him into a photo, I'll try and post one of he and I out at the "farm".

Yeah, my wife is a doctor in residency and I had a landscape company. I was able to sell the company and stay home with the boys while she finishes up her residency and it is a lot of fun. My oldest will be 4 in the end of July and he is starting to enjoy being out at our "farm", so I am hoping to get out there a ton this summer.

Can't wait to see pics of the new chicken housing and newly grown grass

Forgot all about the photos with SCGargoyle. Had a good visit with he and his wife. Great folks, and we're looking forward to having them as neighbors soon.

WOW - I finally finished reading through this thread. I have got to say what a fantastic thread! Tony - you and I have so very much in common which is why I am addicted as well as many others. I guess if I am going to be a part of the "from woods to eggs" I must introduce myself to everybody.

I live in Pickens (only about 15 minutes from you) and am just starting a hobby farm as well. My wife and I also have twins, although are 9 months old (boy and girl) and a 7 year old boy. My son Andrew and I worked through this winter and converted a 8x12 shed into a hen house and added a 10x12 enclosed pen to the side of it. We currently have 2 americana roosters with 4 mature americana hens and 13 americana chicks. This is also my first year experimenting with the gardening thing. I tilled up an area totalling a 20x60 area and plan on putting some seeds in next weekend.

My first tractor was a Yanmar YM2310 - just a hair bigger than yours. You did good choosing a 4wd model your first time around. I made the mistake of choosing a 2wd model with a FEL. I was very cumbersome and not very efficient. I kept it for about a year and sold it as I really needed a 4wd model. I ended up buying a Kubota 4wd model about the size of your Yanmar and I love it. I have 5.5 acres that are somewhat hilly so the 4wd is a must.

I think that you have made incredible progress over the past 4 months or so. I know how hard it is rasing small kids and trying to get something like this going. Congrats to you and your family! I think it is incredible that your family and mine are going through almost the same projects at the same time, not far from each other.

It has taken me about 4 days from start to finish to read this thread and I did not want to post until i had read it all. I am sure I am forgeting a ton as i have been dying to post this for days but I will be a common poster on this thread as I am admitting that I am addicted! Good luck with everything and let me know if there is anything I can do to help as we are not far from each other.

We had a great visit with Tony, and got to see his farm up close and personal. Our property is only about 1-1/2 miles from him, and we can't wait to get started. Although we've had a little clearing done, actual construction is probably 2 years away, so I'm not ready to start a thread of my own. It's good to read everyone's projects, big and small. The big projects teach us how the pros do it, and the small projects show us that it is possible for the average guy or gal. Looking forward to the next installment....
