Bugs on windshield.

If you ever get to cross the Eastern half of the wonderful state of South Dakota in summer via State Road 10, Your opinion on bugs and vehicle windscreens will come to an abrupt change of direction. Visibility can be measured in 10s of miles between washings.

Got to love winter for getting rid of the bugs!

We have periodic "hatches" of various insects here in the high desert. Running through one of the hatches can not only make it hard to see, they plug up the radiator and are very hard to clean out. I've installed metal mesh in all my grills to catch the bugs. The mesh also catches gravel and rocks thrown up by oncoming vehicles (mainly dirt roads around here). I've had two radiators holed by flying gravel.

As a teenager, I worked at a gas station.
A car with several people in it wanted "$2 of Ethel please, and check the oil".

There were about eleventy gazillion bugs on the front of that car. I worked on that cars windshield longer and harder than any other vehicle, ever.
that’s how I remember it being back in the 60’s.

Back in the 60's we made our own windshield cleaning solution.

Kept it in a pump-spray bottle. Used a cotton shop towel to apply. Had to use carefully because it could "stain" the paint on the car.

But MAN did it clean the windshield.

Old two gallon pot. One gallon of clean water. One sack of Bull Durahm tobacco . Sack of tobacco and water boiled in bucket for an hour.

Cool and pour in spray bottle. Spray this on shop towel and use on windshield.

Lots of trips to Sisseton and Britton in Fall and Winter.

Some people don't know that the Glacial Lakes region up there even exists. A veritable breeding ground for all manner of flying splatter.

Ever been to Ikes in Browns Valley?
