Buffalo Gnats

We have a bumper crop of Buffalo Gnats this year. They sure make fishing and mowing miserable, I have never seen them as bad as this year. It seems to be a state wide problem in Illinois and has made the news. I don't know the grand scheme of the gnat other than making all other living things miserable and will be glad when their breeding cycle is over. Now after the gnats all we will have to contend with is Horse Flies, Deer Flies, mosquitoes, Ticks, Chiggers and various other biting and stinging critters. This is why I like Winter!

We use a head net, long sleeve Tee shirts & tuck your cuffs into your socks. Not fashionable but neither are the bites.

On the plus side they keep the tourists & summer people away for a while longer. ;-)

Lawd Lawd, my wife and I had our first runin with them a couple of weeks ago and have the scabs to prove it. We've never encountered anything as miserable as those little devils. They're gone now, hope to never see them again.

the dogs were having a helava time with them this past weekend....

but i swear if found som chiggers already

ticks, mosqueto's etc never seem to like me much

but im one huge walking chigger magnet i guess....

Chiggers love me too as well as poison Oak. I'm allergic to my 16 acre dream.

Just so you southern fellas don't think that you have all the fun I'm moving from Long Island, NY where we don't have buffalo gnats or black flies but do have tons of deer, dog & now Texas Lone Star ticks as well as chiggers.

I'm thankfully trading them for more northern black flies and minus 30 degree winters which I suspect keeps the tick & chigger population down.

Interesting thing about black flies is that get in a car or even a phone booth & they go to the windows trying to get out while leaving you alone.
