The drywal question reminded me what I wanted to ask. Helping friend with some drywalling the sheetrock had many small bubbles in it near thhe back cover paper. There were so many that it looks like it changed how the drywall behaved on cutting nad breaking.

Anybody experienced something like that?

I was working on drywall today and (maybe) had the same experience - lots of bubbles floating to the surface.

This was repair work to a previously sheetrocked and painted wall. The bubbles appeared over the previously painted surface. A full-time drywall guy working with me said that it's air trying to work it's way out and since it can't get past the previously painted surface it works it's way to the visible surface.

Might be baloney, I don't know, but I worked the are several times before it started to dry and the bubbles eventually went away.

Boloney is right.

I worked in a drywall plant in the 60's. Wallboard is made with the front paper side down, the slurry is spread over it, the gray paper laid on top and the face paper folded over and sealed. Any bubbles that form raise to the top, which in this case is the back side of the wallboard.

If quality control is right very few air bubbles are formed.

Thanks Toad, I was wondering about that. I suppose the sheet is heat proceseed/dried after that, correct?

Czechsonofagun, right. as soon as the front paper is folded the board goes into the oven.Ours was about 200 ft long. Knives are set at the end for 8ft,but can be adjusted at 2 ft intervals up to 16ft. The board is stacked face to face, end bands are put on and it is ready for shipment.
