I agree that it looks like a sensor and would highly recommend cleaning the area up before anything else
Getting the broken parts out of the wire connection without damaging it can be fun
When you install the new sensor use pipe dope or Teflon tape not never seize on the threads and a little die-electric grease in the connection boot
Good luck, looks like an easy fix

Do I need to drain the coolant (don't want it gushing out) before I remove? Looks like it is below the reservoir.

Wait...men are wrong??? That would be a first for me (as my wife hits me) ;)
It’s probably high enough that not much would come out. Open slowly and go from there is my best advice.
