Broke a valve

Well, the old girl sucked a valve. Top of valve broke off so dropped down, but don't know if it did any damage to piston. I haven't pulled the head as yet. Just pulled the valve cover. Anyone have any experience with this?

Engine is the 3TNB84-UA. If necessary, anyone have a replacement head?

We have rebuilt heads for those available but they are expensive. Hopefully you won't need one.

Update: The valve retainer clips came off. Valve dropped and beat the beejeebers out of the top of the piston and pieces scored the cylinder walls.

So the best I can determine to repair, is a head/valve job ~$200 + parts, new sleeve and piston, $ price TBD.

Anyone have other suggestions/knowledge? Any added parts recommendations if I choose to do the piston?

You might want to check the valve spring tension or replace the spring before putting it back together. Either the keeper broke or the spring was not holding enough tension to keep it on.

I hope you dont need a new sleeve. The F series do not have sleeves. We should have the other parts though.

Well, that "no sleeve" message was disheartening. It was a good news, bad news, good, then bad news again day. Good was there is a mechanic in the neighborhood. Bad news, well you heard it above. That dramatically changes the labor dynamic.

I looked around for a replacement machine, and am leaning hard to an Orange. I can get a BX2350 (last years model) for a little over $13 with turfs, mid mount 60", FEL and loaded tires.

So I have a used FX24D fix-er-upper if anyone wants to bother. I also have a 72" KK finish mower, 50+ inch rough cut mower, rear bucket, and home built FEL which mounts to the FX24 frame.

The little Orange my friend bought like you described was too low to the ground to run a regular sized post hole digger and the turf tires on his 4x4 do a lot of slipping. He still uses his Craftsman to mow.

You can get .010 & .020 over size pistons.

Well, after much research and anguish, I pulled the trigger and bought a --- wait for it --- a MF GC2400. What I determined in the research was, there is very little difference in specs between these small tractors. So, the major differences were base price, (Deere is dear), local service (MF is the next closest dealer after Deere), and financing (MF has 0 down, 0% for 72 Mos.)

With that financing, I almost bought the TLB version, but just couldn't justify the price difference.

Bottom line: $14,400 + tax for the GC2400 with FEL, 60" MMM, R4 tires loaded, delivered to my door.

Orange was ~ $400 cheaper W/ 36 Mos 0% financing. Blue was higher, but never got to the bottom line same financing as orange. Green was $3K higher same financing as orange.

Bottom line is that it is a contract tractor (made by one company, marketed by a completely independent company under it's own name). Look for parts for the last contract tractors Massey had made. When the contract ends, the parts supply will begin to end. Contract tractors historically begin to lose parts support when the manufacturing contract ends, simply because there are two different companies involved.
