Briggs L head twins

Maybe this is a crazy question, but I have a couple of B+S twin cyl vertical engines and I was looking and wondering if they could be changed to horizontal if the base and side cover were swaped. Has anyone done this, anything need to be changed inside the engine if it is possible? I realize the intake and muffler would need to be changed. I have found a few heavy duty garden tractors with blown 16 - 20 hp engines that can be had right and I have a sweet runnin 18 if I can get the shaft pointed in the right direction.

The blocks are the same for the Side and Down shaft engines.

you will need-

Proper base (back cover now) with bolt holes, and sump

Rods or Rod caps with slingers on them

Any other Oil distribution parts, such as a flapper.

Muffler, and pipes

Intake manifold, Carb, air filter box, any governor rods

Ive seen it done...takes a long long time to round up parts and stuff...

Not really all that worth it IMHO.

Thanks MT, I didn't mention I do have a horizontal donor that is complete but the previous owner ran it out of oil so internally it's junk, so I have all the parts and with winter approaching also the time.
