looking for a good place to find a 808766 for a simplicity mower. no longer made by b&s. model #303777 1111-a1

What happened to the one on the engine ?

For a flywheel I'd call around to mower repair shops to find one from a parted out engine.

Can you just buy the starter ring ?

I believe you are correct, just spent some time searching for a ring that would fit your engine, nothing.

Cant you just drop a new motor into it. Get a cross reference from manufacturer or b&s.?

It's hard to believe there's no flywheels to be had. I would offer a small engine shop premium price to find one.
