I picked up one at Bed, Bath, & Beyond a few days ago; stainless steel with the top edge rolled to make a handle instead of having a wooden handle. It's a little heavier and stronger material than the drywall mud tool, since they show using it to chop vegetables.:D And UPS delivered our new (refurbished) KitchenAid Artisan mixer yesterday evening (a day earlier than their tracking system showed on the Internet).

This may not be the "best" way to get a sourdough starter going, but this worked pretty well, if you give it enough time. So I decided against the bread machine, but have been using the KitchenAid mixer to make this Sourdough Bread. It's quite good, although I hope as my starter ages, to get just a little stronger "sour" flavor.

Now if I could just find a good recipe for really light, fluffy dinner rolls. The ones I've made certainly did not go to waste, but haven't been quite the texture I'm looking for.

When we buy regular loaves of bread at the store, we've been buying whole wheat instead of white bread for quite a few years; not necessarily for health reasons, but because we like it. However, in spite of making sourdough bread occasionally, and regular white bread, I'd never made any homemade whole wheat bread until today. This recipe will undoubtedly get used a lot around here; excellent whole wheat bread.

A neighbor recently gave me the starter for Amish Friendship Bread. Now it seems to me it should be called cake instead of bread, since it's sweet and cinnamon flavored, but whatever you call it, it's certainly good, so the starter's been fed and I'll be making more of that stuff Saturday.

Thanks Bird, I want to try that recipe. It sounded like a huge loaf, using a total of 6+ cups of flour till I saw that it made two loaves. I think I'll halve it & try in in the bread machine.

Yep, Jack, if you only want one loaf, you'd have to halve the recipe. I'd heard or read that whole wheat bread was harder to get to rise, and of course, that recipe did use two, instead of one, package of yeast, but it sure did rise and made the texture just what I wanted. I was using Gold Metal Stone Ground wheat flour, Pillsbury white bread flour, and Fleischman's Active Dry Yeast.

And Egon, come on by and sample it.
