My salsco 600 ,that i purchased in my tractor deal, has arrived. The dealer got a troybuilt one in at the same time. I can tell you this is alot better build, and about the same money. The salsco has adjustable chip size, two knifes instead of one,and thicker steel.as to how it works.... we got 5 feet of snow on the ground, with a 20inch forcast for western Maine tommorrow. I think its going to be awhile before i get it to my woodlot.will keep you posted.beggining to think ill be still making snowballs in june around here.

Looks good, I will be interested to hear how it works as I could use a chipper myself. BTW I live in Eastern Maine and we have the same 2+ feet of snow on the ground, the same 20" of snow forcast for today and will be making the same snowballs in June. Is there a second feed chute or do you have to lift everything into the hopper?

As for spring, the farmers have a saying around here (besides "a farting horse is never tired") that the Robin always gets "crapped" on 3 times. Meaning at least 3 snows after the Robin returns. I haven't seen any Robins yet this year...

OK I understand the robin saying but how does flatulence keep a horse from getting tired??? I just love old timer sayings.

I wanted a chipper that would feed from the top,so it would gravity feed itself.my experiences with side feeding units[with no automatic feed] ,is that sometimes, when the knifes start to dull,or for what ever reason,it wont suck it in -you have to help it.with the top feeding unit,i can position it in there,[i hope]once its started i can walk away and get another, while its chipping.I work alone, and i thought this might speed up the process a little.this is only my theory i hope it works.coming come 20 plus years with a sawmill background,i know how dangerous chippers can be,and dont want my friends and family even neer it.the only downfall might be you wouldnt want your brush very long because it would be awkward to handle. This isnt an issue with me,because i liketo use as much,of the tree possible, and will cut the tree limbs right down to 2 inchs.
I HAD FORGOTTEN TO MENTION A CHIPPER WAS MY WIFES IDEA, she thought the brush piles in my selectively cut woodlot were ugly.although i mentioned the animals love them,i dont mind,it gives me a chance to play...i mean work with BOTA.

I agree, it looks great.
I'd like to know what is the minimum PTO HP to operate a chipper like that and the weight of it?

DANNY; I bought it as a package deal ,but they get about 1750
STEPHANE: the brochure says minumum 8 hp required,im sure my bx -23 will not struggle.

look at it on line atwww.salsco.com

Escavader,
Thanks for the update on the Salsco 600. I'm pretty sure this is the unit I will be getting.

I really like the compact size of the unit. Also with the 4 to 1 ratio and 2160 rpm flywheel speed they really throw the chips acording to my local dealer. Throwing out the chips is important to me because I want the stuff spread back out in the woods as I don't use chips for mulch. Too many bugs close to the house.

Best of luck with it... Hopefully by July we'll see some action shots.... Ha Ha....

Chris

I have a BX23 too and this is exactly the kind of chipper i'm looking for... what's the average cost for chipper like that.

Not too hard on the PTO, good weight: 388 lbs and compact.

Nice buy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cliff,

Sorry to say, I don't think the Salsco and the Mackissic are in the same league...

The Salsco is more money and I guess it would all depend on how much you plan to use it... The Mac is a shredder as well and I guess some people may want that function.

But I think chipper for chipper the Salsco is more HD than the Mac...

I think you're right. It's useful if you're looking for a smaller, lighter PTO driven chipper (with a shredder). I just thought I'd point out the option. Mackissic has a heavier option, (also from Northern), but it costs more too.

I like the concept of the Valby CH140. Yes it's a LOT more $$$ but it is built VERY solid! I like the idea of loading at a low level. I've watched a video from my dealer and can see where the power feed would be handy for larger stuff with limbs, but it really ate the stuff up. 1-3 ft per second I believe. I believ it also runs the 26" diameter 220# flywheel/cutter disc direct which is better for bearing life. There are also "fan" blades on the disc to help blow the chips.

I'm sorry, but I just don't like working with materials over my head. It would seem that loading something like a long limb or a christmas tree into the Salsco would be a tough job. If a guy were to cut it down to something easily handled, then a much smaller chipper would do well.

I'm still on the fence either way. The video had some clarity issues in parts but Jeff at www.threeriversforestry.com has a nice video.

another option for anyone considering a heavier chipper is the jinma, also sold by farm pro. i bought one last year, and it's an animal . i've run 5" material through it and it barely notices. the horizontal self-feed makes for a lot less strain on my back. they have a small problem with circular clips breaking on the self-feeder that about half an hour on a grinder seems to fix, but other than that, they are extremely solid and better made than I expected.

Also heavy--you need to be able to hoist and feel safe with 850 lbs on the 3 pt. and need a minimum of 20 hp at the pto. finally, they are built in China, which may or may not be an issue . . . there are two models, 4 and 6 inch, and i would strongly recommend the 6.

Lou--

It's basically two small circular clips, called circlips, that some people have reported breaking. when they break, the self-feeder stops. some people apparently resolved it by removing two components on the self-feed mechanism and grinding them smoother so they don't bang into the circlips. I did this on my chipper--even though I haven't experienced any problems with it--and the job was not difficult. Another option is to buy several sets of clips and replace them if/when they break -- they're cheap and it's only a 30-40 minute job once you've done it a few times.

There is an extensive thread on this subject on the TBN site (maybe the attachments group?) complete with detailed pictures on the procedure. Try searching for "circlip" or "chinese chipper" and you should find it.

Nobody that I saw said this would have prevented them from buying this chipper.

I haven't heard the saying before but I'll throw out a guess. My guess is that "farting horse" is their name for a tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
