brand name VS ???

Thanks for all the post folks lots of good info. I have bought many pieces of equipment over the years everything from tractor trailers to dozers. I've also owned name brand and X brand, in all honesty both served fine. Of course I have never bought blind that is why I question what is going on. I believe buying X brand may be a gamble but sometimes that gamble could save thousands while helping a new machine hit the market. If a reputable new machine hits the market it does help the cost of all machines to stay affordable{resonable}. It also forces companies to keep on their toes, after all if name brand_____ has a monopoly then why would they bother upgrading their machine? I also have to wonder if X is making machines for name brand _____ then what does that really say about the name brand _____?

Not sure I have ever seen a tractor by any of those brands

However, not to beat your point to death but, just because a brand is still around is no guarantee.

As is often repeated, the equipment is only as good as the dealer representing the company.

That can work both ways so I always look solely at the equipment itself and never rely on a dealer or a dealer network for anything. Thanks to the advent of the internet, I can get virtually anything, even whole tractors, etc... shipped straight to my door from anywhere in the world so the dealer is far less important than they used to be.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to bash dealers, especially the ones who are simply trying to make an honest living while treating their customers right.

You mean to tell me that other companys make tractors. I thought only John Deere made tractors. I am not surprised i recently found out there are other trucks than a Ford also. But Ford is really the only truck and John Deere is really the only tractor. Right ?

I buy because of Dealer support, And no one supports as well as John Deere and Ford. Well, There is Toyota. But arnt the rest just 4 wheel drive "Things"

Buy for dealership and support if you run the crap out of your equipment.

I think if I was making a living with my tractor I might've picked another brand. But I'm not, so next day delivery of any part on my tractor isn't really worth a premium to me.
I did my research and I don't see me trading it in, in the next couple decades, so resale didn't matter much either.
Initially I was looking at used Massey's but then the ones I wanted used weren't available locally, and then the one model I wanted was the only one made in Brazil for only a few years and maybe only a few dozen ever got sold in Canada...
So is a used lame duck model in a big brand better than a new common model of an small brand?
In my buying calculus, no, but everyone has their own requirements, budgets, and experiences to draw from when making a purchase. I guess that's why there's 100's of different tractors to choose from!
