Brake Shoes

Does anyone re-line old brake shoes anymore? My JD 950 brakes are wearing down. JD wants $72 per shoe (not per set) for new ones. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Times 4 = almost $300 if I install them myself.

Check the yellow pages for companies that do clutch re lining. They can also do shoes if they are riveted. It they are bonded shoes, then it is more difficult to find someone. Also check with a local auto parts store. Most brake shoes have a standard part number and are available in the parts store by special order. I can't believe that the price quoted is for one shoe, but possibly for one axle, which is more likely.... 4 shoes to a axle.... 2 primary and 2 secondary.

Believe it Junkman. When I go to the JDparts online and select brake shoe and select that for my shopping cart, it automatically fills in a quantity of 4 at $71.79 each for a total of $287.16. And it says brake shoe, not brake shoe set.

Have you inspected your linings? If they are anything like Yanmar, (might even be Yanmar), they only wear mostly on one end and can be reversed for a whole new surface, and are good for another 20 years.

Thanks, Norm. Yes the 950 was made by Yanmar. 1984 model year. I will take a look at the shoes and see if they can be reversed.

If you find you still need shoes, you might post in the Yanmar forum and find out what Yanmar model matches your 950 and check with http://hoyetractor.com/, a good Texas company, for shoes at about 1/2 the price of Deere.

I had a JD 850 and ran into the same problem. I think that about 5 years ago JD wanted $50 per shoe. I never did replace them. Only one side needed to be replaced, so I just dealt with it. Since then I sold the 850.
