To you guys that own box blades I have a question. First I know that a box blade can be used to level ground, but can it be used to cut weeds off at ground level with out using the teeth. I don't own any of this stuff yet but I am thinking of renting or maybe buying later if things go right. This area is really dusty and a blade mower will kick up the dust so maybe a box blade would do the job?

If you want to cut weeds without tearing up the ground then you may want to get a mower.. I had to use the teeth on my box blade to tear out the blackberry roots. That worked much better than just the blade.

I've used mine to cut weeds off at ground level. After 1 pass - no weeds and ground was level, about half an inch lower than when I started, but level. :)

A box blade will not work well for this use. You will end up with a pretty ragged looking piece of ground with most of the weeds just knocked over.

A few things to consider. Is the ground hard, or soft and dry? How heavy is the box blade? A blade that weighs 150-200 lbs per foot width is going to have a good chance at cutting those weeds off, where as a light weight blade may just bend them over. If the ground is hard, you will end up with a cleaner job vs having weeds mixed in with the dirt if the ground is a bit softer.

Just my experience over the years.

If the goal is to get rid of all things that grow - use a heavy box blade and you will end up with barren soil...

I have done this when setting up for a foundation - however scraping the soil will leave a pile of dirt, rocks and dead plants when you are down.

I normally use a air mask when shredding due to the dust:D
