3600 painted wheels.jpg

Before and after of these Firestone wheels dated May 1978 to replace old JD rims and tires.. The worn out COOP tires in the above photo were replaced with 50% Firestone tires that I got for $25 each from my tire shop that he had held for a very long time. New tubes were $15 each mounted. The rims had more rust on the inside then the outside and Skyco OSPHO was first used to address the rust then I used Rustoleum Implement gray primer then spray can of Ford 75-81 white.

One front wheel that came on the 3600 that I am replacing with the above.

OSPHO removing rust stains from paint.jpg

It took about 15 seconds to do this test with Skyco OSPHO using tossable HF paint brush then I walked away. A few days later I noted to less rusty spot and gray streaks running down from it and realized the web OSPHO tip really worked.

Now that I know the OSPHO has this kind of potential I will do more serious testing on paint covered with rust stain. It should reduce the number of coats of primer to cover.

Since the rusty 6 lug rims have not let the tubes blow out of the huge valve time holes I plan to run them for a while hoping to find a nice quick spread set with 50% tires. The 3000 is getting to pretty to use and hope to have it back by the end of this week so we can start painting on the one arm loader.

711 ford loader belly straps.jpg

I am happy with this test of 8-2968 Ford Blue from Tractor Supply TCS. The centerpiece is OEM paint color on 1980 Rusty from an out of the weather skin bracket with the rattle can cap for reference. I am pleased and will open the gallon can soon that is now on sale for $25 a gallon and what I plan on the skin for Rusty at some point and all equipment starting with the 'new' 711 Ford FEL we are mounting on the 1966 3000 diesel.

The last picture is the 711 FEL belly strap that I picked up from the shop in a mess and cleaned it, coated with Skyco OSPHO, Rust-Oleum Implement Gray Primer and the TSC 8-2968 Ford Blue and now this morning I am going to run it back by the shop since he is fitting the loader to make the front bracket.

Rusty came to me without functional stabilizers for the lift arms so I designed the below from TCS options and a bent light weight stablizer bar and got them installed last night. I hope to test them soon but they should stop the flop from side to side.

The hitch you see is new like one that came on the bush hog with a rough deck but more or less intact. The chain is the lowest grade 3/8" chain. I have a Pat's Easy Change system for this tractor so I got enough chain to come back several inches if/when I install Pat's system that is the Cat 1 to Cat 2 version. The others are Cat 2 to Cat 2 and so much stronger looking.

Look forward to the restoration. I always enjoy this type stuff myself, just wish I had more time to tackle a project like this.

I would be cautious about the Magic brand paint, so far I'm not to impressed with it. The top coat paint seems ok with hardner, but the red oxide primer I'm not happy with at all! I just refinished my mower and the paint hardened up ok, but the primer over a month later still hasn't. The paint pulled up off a spot when assembling it back together. The primer is what failed though, it pulled off the metal. After looking close it was sticking to the metal good, just soft.

I never tried their primer and just plan to stick with the Rustoleum Gray Implement primer. The spray cans from New Holland does dry much faster that the finish coat of Magic I have noticed.

I have always wanted to make a paint booth where I can learn how to do a good paint job. I saved the blower out of a 1949 furnace to give me some good air flow.

Me too. Mine usually consists of hanging up old bed sheets, using magnets against metal cabinets and hanging lights and sometimes the small parts to be painted from the garage door wheel guides. Would like to make some kind of lazy Susan to rotate heavier parts easier.

Maybe I missed it but tell us more about the condition of the rest of the machine and type of power and tranny. I'm casually looking for a newer 3000 derivative or slightly larger to add to my Ford corral and interested in what kind of problems to expect.

Our 1980 3600 has set out most of its life and mainly was used for hay making as in cutting and raking. It has a strong great sounding engine and the lift arms will hold good load off the ground for 2+ hours. I saw it when I was out looking in only a car and pasted on it but the more I looked the better it seemed to be. Actually pulled a trailer 300 miles to pick up a 2600 Ford gas tractor but it was way over promoted. Rusty was parked only 15 miles away as it turned out when I pulled it up again on the GPS. There was no answer when I called so I drove over. They had just got home. He was still stuck on $3500 so I paid him and got back on I-69 about dark and got home about midnight.

While our 1966 3000 Ford started out nicer the purchase price was $5200 and needed new rear wheel seals because the brakes were oil soaked. We put the antique Ford 711 one arm loader and turned it into a show tractor for the most part it seems. We have the wife's late father's 265 MF heavy bush hogging and using the Cat 2 3PH fork lift attachment. The 3000 will carry the 7' BH finish mower and the 3600 the 7' BH brand 9" offset twin spindle light weight bush hog that cuts like a finish mower but can handle 1" bushes, dead limbs, bricks from time to time, etc without trashing the blades and deck. It is like two side by side 42" bush hogs.

These 1965 and up three cylinder Fords are relative dirt cheap today and may have another 30-40+ years of useful life and the NH dealer still can get most any part. I like them because I grew up on 800 series Fords and they handle and operate the same way but have a bit more weight and power. I love the 60 HP 265 MF for its weight and power but it just not as fun to drive as the 3000 and 3600. The 3000+ was more of the USA built compact tractors in their day.
