I just bought a Boom Pole and would like to know if there are any do's and don'ts of use and also the different ways some of you have used them. Thanks, G

Be careful when pulling heavy load that your not at an angle. i almost flipped mine trying to pull a downed tree at an angle. luckly i clutched in time. now i make sure as little chain between me and the load and try to pull as straight as possible.

They can be dangerous since most of your load will be applied above your center of gravity which can make unpleasant things happen very quickly. I used one on my last tractor frequently when clearing my then vacant lot. Now that I have the use of a FEL with hooks on my TC-40D I have never reattached the boom pole.

If you use a good measure of common sense with the boom pole you shouldn't have a problem. Keep it as low as possible and be careful out there.

That is the kind of answers I'm looking for.
I tend to be an "I'll try it" type of person at times. G

Rule #1; boom poles are for lifting, drawbars are for pulling
Rule #2; see rule #1

A boom pole is meant to LIFT and CARRY a load -- not to PULL any load. If you try to pull from the pole with it's inherently high tow point the probability of getting the front wheels off the ground is very high. Please don't do that.

Gerard, I get a good bit of use out of my boom pole. I often use it to pull logs and small trees, but I tie to the base near the tractor and keep the 3pt low. I only pick up the end of the log just enough to clear obstacles as going any higher is asking for trouble. With plenty of weight in the loader I am able to also pick up may large loads and transport them, SLOWLY, with the boom pole. I prefer using the boom pole rather than chains on the loader as the 3pt has a higher weight capacity than does the loader. Just for the sake of knowing what it will do, and be very careful to do this slowly, tie a rope to the boom pole and the other end to something stationary, as though you were pulling out a small tree. Start low and see that it takes a lot of pulling to lift the front tires. As you ease up on the height of the pole, it will become easier to raise the front of the tractor as the rear tires are simply a pivot point and the higher you go, the easier to turn the tractor over backwards. So keep it LOW! John

GerardC, I bought a Lienbach boom pole to use with my spiked tooth harrow. I pull the harrow with the draw bar but use the boom pole to lift the harrow up off the ground for transport or to avoid dragging over what I don't want to. It is a fairly light duty pole with a lift capacity of 1000#. I believe it cost me $75 new.

I really like that idea. Sounds like it's worked good for you. My Boom Pole (KK from TSC) is rated at 500 pounds, but I'm sure it'll be able to handle a task like that. G

Hey G, A boom pole is good for dragging heavy things like trees you wrap your chain around the end lift it just barely off the ground(with the close hook)so as not to drag along grass tearing it up...keeps the front of the cut end from digging in your grass... If your going to pull against something like it was stated earlier have pole as low as it can go even adjust top link out to lower hook attaching ring on BP.
I use mine a good bit lifting engines dragging trees ,even pulled about twenty old locust posts out with it,Oh and believe it or not remember that barn I built? the 33' steel beam shown in last pic was set with the boom pole from the high ground side of course /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Mark S.
