bolens peerless transmission harsh launch engagement?

I was just given a Bolens g16yt tractor by my wife's father which has probably spent 10 years in the garage and only has about 40 hours or so. It has a B&S 16hp engine and a peerless transmission, great condition. only belts are cracked with age.

One thing I noticed is just how hard the engagement really is. The top inch is where it all happens. It is completely impossible to have a slow engagement - it launches hard and sends you back in your seat. Higher gears mean I am going to lose the chunk of turf I am on.

Looking at the design underneath its belt or no belt so I don't know how much really COULD be done but...

Is there a way to make this a little smoother or adjust it out in any way? Will a new belt make this any better?

You may want to make sure that you have the correct belt on it.

I think it is because it feels correctly taught when engaged.
I also just got this thing and gave it a good whirl last weekend - much better than I expected but still a little jumpy.
My original problem was based around starting in 5th from a stop - I had no idea you can shift a peerless while moving which a friend taught me. If I start in a low gear then shift up its not too too bad. I wish it was smoother but thats probably asking too much without a hydro.

It's just the nature of the belt idler clutch system. Nowhere near as smooth as a disc clutch. But simple and positive and easy to work on.

My G14 and my 850 are both grabby.
