Blizzard conditions and air filters

My older B3030 had the downward facing inlet pipe like yours, and I never had problems with it. They got rid of the little bend at the end for the B2650, and now it ingests snow. I was thinking about trying to fit a B3030 inlet pipe, or making a little deflector of some sort, but have been busy clearing snow. :)

First, I don't know why my thumbnails are upside down! If you click on them, the pictures appear in new windows right-side-up. I took them with the iPad, not the best camera, but convenient at the time.

When I get done snow blowing with my front mounted B2782A snow blower, I often have the front grill on my B3030HSDC frozen solid with caked on snow, but I've never had any snow in the intake pipe. Some small amount of snow gets through front grill and melts on top of the battery, but that's it; I've never actually seen snow in there, just water. I guess Kubota took one step forward and two steps back on the intake design if you are having problems now on newer machines.

I have a precleaner on my Kioti hood and the plow when angled shoots snow right towards the precleaner and in windy and blowing snow the precleaner will fill up and choke the engine some. I unhooked the hose to the precleaner and rotated the air filter housing so it received warm air coming through the radiator. I usually have it this way all winter. I do believe in those precleaner's, When doing dandelion it can fill up in one mowing when those thing are blowing around.

This would take some tinkering, but if operations in these conditions were to be necessary.... Craft a complete shroud/enclosure for the air cleaner that would then draw air vertically through a continuation of the shroud that at least partially covers the exhaust manifold. This would likely go a long way to melting fine snow and warming the filter to prevent clogging. Any melt would likely be evaporated and taken into the intake as moisture, kind of like running the engine in a rain storm or some such. A thought for wha it's worth....

I had this problem last winter when snow blowing in very cold dry weather and after the first freeze up filter i put a double layer of a cotton sheet over the front part of the hood where the air intake is for the filter. It collects most of the fine snow and i have not had a problem with the filter freezing up at all this season. The weather has been colder and more snow also. It is my redneck remedy and it has worked???

I hope I never have to drive a tractor in a snow storm severe enough to clog the air filter. My hats off too those who have been battling the blizzards this year. PLEASE don't send any of that white stuff South.

Hi Stanley
This picture shows some of the snow that collects at the top of the radiator. The inlet hose normally sits in the same spot on the B2650 as it does on the B3030: in that little cut out on the left side of the picture. It seems like there is a lot of snow collecting at this location.

I rotated the hose so the inlet now sits behind the fan shroud. Its not as open to incoming air, but it is more protected from blowing snow. Once Im done with snow, I will put it back to its original position.

Thanks

DelSc, thanks for the pictures. Been working the B3030 hard today with all the snow and no issues. But then it hasn't been very windy either. Stanley

No problem. I haven't had any problems since rotating the inlet hose.
