Cicada Killer, biggest one I've ever seen.

I kept noticing a lot of holes showing up in the yard. I assumed that they were being dug by some type of rodent and really didn't give it much thought.
One day I was out there and a tremendous insect flew down to the ground made quite a noise for an insect, but unmistakably so.
I went over to it after it hit the ground and it was one of these large wasps caring a much larger Cicada. I was amazed. I got the camera and got this lousy photo just as it neared it's hole and dragged the larger insect down to the bottom.
Then it was on the internet trying to find out what happened. I've been kind of an insect geek ever since.

i had a bunch show up at my last house. I loved to watch them drag cicattas in to the holes and fly with them. after a while they started making too many holes in one spot so i wound up plowing all their nests up and torched a few. got rid of all of them

Robert, if you already have Lantana in bloom, it's pretty easy to figure out where you live without it being in your profile.:)

Not quite yet. That pic is from last year sometime.
But it's not long off.

I got stung by one of those when I was sitting with a girl after school years ago. Stung my hand, since I was sitting with my hands on the ground behind me and inadvertently had my hand over the hole. They easily top the list in pain inflicted by a bug for me. I had no Idea what it was until our Biology teacher told us.

Never heard them called that. We call them Sand Wasps, but now that you mention it I have seen them carrying cicadas. Mean looking things.

Wow, I thought our Red wasps were pretty big, that thing could take on a big Bumblebee?

I have seen some almost 4x's the size of a red wasp, they are big!!. You can hear a Cicada when they are getting their rear eaten too, all he$$ breaks out in the tree.
