In all seriousness...

What are the benefits of using a piece of 3/4 inch plate for the top?

Is it to have mass, so the table won't move when assembling?

Does it improve welding capability?

Does it act as a heat sink?

Simply interested in the logic of building it with heavy, heavy table top.

And "it's what I had on hand" does not count!!!

Hate to disappoint you BackRoad but it literally was what "I had on hand". I've been moving it around left to right for over four years wondering what to do with it!!!

My other welding table is 4' x 8' and only 3/8" thick. It is more than adequate for my needs.

I used 3/4". I'm hard on my table. I beat the snot out of stuff on the table top. I've even welded jigs to the top and then cut them off. I wanted it to stay uniform. I have no idea if I could have used less. I just didn't want to ever wish I had. :)

Oh sure. You are savvy enough corner the market on ball peen hammers but claim you can't handle a CNC table. We're on to you Terry! :D

This seems like it could finally be a legitimate reason for a Go Fund Me account.
