Beware! Yellow jackets are out.

I didn't have any spray on hand when I found out the hard way there were yellow jackets nested by a hose spigot I needed to hook up to. (Right on the end of the knuckle, hurt worse than any I can remember.)

A local farm boy was there working on something and he told me to mix up some Dawn dishwashing liquid with water and throw it on them... they'll drop to the ground like nerve gas. At first I thought, is this a game and he wants to see me running from the angry devils... but he was serious. So, I did as he suggested and those things hit the ground dead, as fast as any spray I've ever used. I still scratch my head over that one.

Regarding the underground ones - we call them meat bees - if you can find the hole in the ground you can wait until just after sundown and then use one of those gopher gassers. It will wipe out the entire nest. If you then decide to dig it up - it will resemble something like a large ball of paper mache. You can also use those sticky traps (get them at Lowes - expensive about $9 a trap) and it will capture hundreds. I do not recommend the lure traps as they will bring in those critters from miles around.

Cup of unleaded at 5 this morning and no more jackets for now. I have several traps hung up on the roof overhang hat are baited with the liquid attractant but it barely works. They prefer cat food or salmon that I put in the traps. Some of the little Bastaards have figured out how to get out of those traps. They can't escape the unleaded bath. I got stung 50 to 60 times when I was cutting wood 15 miles from the doctor. I dam near died that day. I now have an epipen with me or close at hand when I am doing outdoor work. I love those things.

If I'm not mistaken, that alone can make you allergic even though you never were before.

I can / can not say this is fact.... but I had been stung many times in my past (10 X's with multiple stings at once) when I worked as a framer.... never a reaction... then 4yrs ago standing outside the garage working on the Jeep... 1 sting on the hand from a yellow jacket... "no big deal".... 20 mins later in the ER...
