I always buy the cheap stuff, but I used some of that Echo Black Diamond at my buddy's house and it's pretty awesome. Holds up real well.

I have a Stihl F350 trimmer. I also have what must be - darn near every type "head" that Stihl makes. As far as string - the triangular stuff works best for me.

However - I've gone one better. I have the head that uses the three nylon free swinging blades. I took one new nylon blade to the local welding shop and they made me two sets(six blades) out of steel.

This head is now even better than the saw blade or the steel tri-lobe blade.

Been using Craftsman spiral trimmer line for years. The .080 feeds okay on my Homelite trimmer head and the .155 is tough as nails for my push trimmer with fixed line head.

Been using Stihl "X-Line" 0.105 diameter for very heavy brush and blackberries that are under 3/4 inch. Works great.
Auto bump heads work great.
Many folks never learn how to wind the string on the heads and I have never understood that. It is quite simple.
I buy it in 3 lb spools and save a lot of money.

Tried the Oregon filament line and found it to be junk. The claim that there is fine wire in the center is hogwash. It would be SOOOO unsafe to put wire in a string for this purpose. It does convince a lot of folks to buy the stuff however. It is merely a different color of plastic filament.

I may have tried just about every brand, and size, available, and I really can't say that any particular one has been better than another. Of course I used the heavy string when I had a heavy duty Stihl string trimmer, and when I had a DR string trimmer, I also used Stihl. But now I'm using an EGO string trimmer with .095" string and I'm using RINO-TUFF string from Home Depot. It seems to work as well as any other has. I have an extra spool for the trimmer, so when I run out of string, I can very quickly and easily just change spools, then refill the empty spool at my convenience.

For .155", I bought bulk round line because it was cheapest. But Echo Rapid Loader wouldn't grip it enough, so I bought some more Echo Cross Fire.

For .095", I usually get by with anything in a bump knob head. Some lines might give more trouble, though. Had a Grass Gator 3630 and extra spools for it. Now switched from Echo to Stihl. The standard Stihl head works on the same principle as the Grass Gator. Didn't buy extra Stihl spools for it yet.

People buy Black & Decker GrassHog spools prewound, but it's not hard to wind empty spools with .065" line.

So from the posts it seems that many folks have spare spools. Do the majority of folks that have spare spools find it a challenge to restring the spools and that is why or is there another reason?

My string head has a dual spool (two separate lines vs the single line spool) and I always have two spare lengths of string in my rear pocket for restringing so I don't have to return to the truck. When I run out of string it takes me less than 2 minutes from engine shutoff to restart with a fully loaded spool after winding both sides of the dual spool and reinstalling on the head. I run on the larger spool about 130 inches of string (10+ feet) on each of the two spools so I rewind 260 inches of string each load.

My Stihl shop has a practice spool station for folks to learn how to restring a spool head. I kind of laughed but they said many folks have a real problem. I have never been able to ask anyone what is it that they have a problem with.
Thus I will ask you folks. What is the re-string issue that bothers you or makes it a challenge.

Getting the spool back in the head without the bottom roll unrolling. The self rolling heads just flat out work better.

Having extra spools prewound I learned on the Internet from a lawncare professional. It's like having your employees making a pit stop and getting back to work and you can rewind the spools back at the shop.

The new-style heads such as the Grass Gator have compartmentalized spools so the lines don't get heated together so much and good slots to hold the line from unwinding, but I still can have a little difficulty. Not putting too much line on a spool helps some.
