We dig these all the time about 15 min with a walkbehind trencher we use a ditchwitch 1820 and have done max of 10 inches wide. Look in your local shopper there will be someone willing to trench it cheaper than renting.

I have dug footers with my stump bucket. I think a stump bucket could do it, too. It's also called a poor man's backhoe...

Finally completed burying 200' of 6" pipe. I tried the trencher (rental) on the first 100' however, largest trencher was 4" wide. Digging out to correct width, was more difficult. I instead purchased potato plow, broke the surface, with the correct width. Because the soil was sandy loam, it did not take long to hand dig this, with the correct slope for drainage. I have pictures..and will post as soon as I can.

Sounds like the perfect mini-excavator project to me.

A Dig-It or similar towable backhoe would work too.

A while back, I purchased a Ditch Witch 1330 36" x 4" trencher and made my own blocks to extend it to 6" width. I've trenched french drains all over my property and found it's the quickest way and able to get in tight locations. I have rock teeth on and that makes a big difference.
