I was wondering what shape of conventional style bucket people have found to be most capable and versatile for the broad range of functions they use their loader for. I dont mean best for a specific function ... altho it could be. I mean "does everything well enuf that, in comparison of all uses, it comes out ahead of the others".

The standard utility buckets that are an equilateral triangle in cross section work fine and are certainly the most common. However they can be difficult to get completely full unless you have a tall pile of loose material to load from. I think a bucket that is maybe 20-30% deeper from front to back than it is tall would be a bit more versatile, particularly for loading material from ground level or scraping along the ground. Incidentally that is roughly the shape that you see as the standard on skidsteers. Anything in between those would probably be a good compromise too.

This is probably a good place to ask:

What is the purpose is having a roundback vs squareback bucket?

Supposedly a round back releases the dirt better.
