Belt Grinder

Wow. Nice job on the hinge. I need some of those $7 one inch pillow blocks!

That looks like just the tool for sharpening my lawn mower blades. What are the advantages of a belt grinder over a conventional bench grinder? I wonder if my belt sander would sharpen mower blades?

It would be best to set up a jig so that you can achieve a hollow grind.

Biggest common mistake is people clamping the blade in a vise and using an angle grinder. You achieve a razor sharp edge, but thanks to the convex profile you lose that edge quickly in use.

Several years back I mounted my Bosch 4x24 belt sander upside down in a simple stand and started using it as a grinder. I have a nice Baldor pedestal grinder but have hardly turned it on since. The belt grinder is faster, cooler, easier to control. I use it for deburring and shaping mostly. That positive experience is what made me go for this big boy grinder. I have some attachments for the new grinder, contact wheels of various sizes, that make getting a hollow grind very easy.

I hate threads like this. I am finally settling in with my proud score of a Baldor 7in pedestal grinder at a Boeing auction... Put new grinding wheels on for ferrous and non ferrous materials, added metal dryer ducting and tied it into a DIY cyclone dust collector in front of a shop vac that is all on wheels.

And now you have to show my a belt grinder and super cool mod. :smiley_aafz: :drink: :mur:

Since retirement I got rid of the two East Coast houses, several storage units full of accumulated dreck, and three households worth of furniture etc. Now down to just the two West Coast houses with stuff.

I will admit to a weakness for tools though.

This grinder is a BEAST. I am cleaning up and matching the two main parts of the new backhoe thumb. I am not the world's best plasma cutter so there is a fair amount of cleanup to do.

It is possible to remove too much metal in a twinkling. They are 1/2" steel.

With a few adjustments it is very easy to grind both inside and outside curves.

Have to think about cleanup, it throws crud all over especially in the horizontal position.

The horizontal position with your large table makes it ideal for grinding that thumb part!

I got a set of small wheels (1/2" to 1"). Used the 3/4" wheel for final shaping of the "teeth". Just took a few seconds for each one. Same thing for beveling the 3/8" braces. One pass at 3/4 speed.

Like the MIG welder and the plasma cutter, this is a tool I should have got a long time ago. Very productive. Have to think about some kind of guard though I have not seen any installed. I use full face mask and heavy leather gloves but even so that belt is traveling at 35-45 mph.
