Beginners Luck: Stump Grinder Jammed with Wood Chunk

Another thought could also be, try bolting or hooking a chain in one of the holes trying to spin it free that way.

Also with the chunk lodged up in there, it might be very difficult to unbolt and remove the blade. It could possibly lead to damage.

And another thought, could the gearbox be loosened without removing the blade? If so, that might give enough play to spin it out.

Good luck and let us know how you fixed it.

Would it be possible to catch a tooth on a stump with a good edge and drive forward or backwards with the PTO disengaged to move the grinding wheel around and dislodge the obstruction?

EXACTLY what I was thinking!

I think this is the best suggestion. Use the tractor drive to turn the wheel opposite normal rotation to dislodge the chunk. You can get on back to work without disassembling anything.

It is free of the jam now. I saturated everything with WD40 and then backed the wheel slowly onto a green stump. It jumped on the first attempt but came free on try number two. The chunk actually split and came out in two pieces. Thanks all for your help.

What a great bunch here! Great job getting it out. I learn so much on this forum.

Teach on... I've got a lot to learn, still.

That was good idea.. I'd have never thought of that.
Good to hear that you're back up and running. Now the real question is how do you prevent from happening again.
There are lots of stump grinder users on here, hopefully they can give you some pointers.

WD40, Gods nectar for us mechanized folk!

I buy it by the gallon, then load it into a squirter bottle...:2cents:

WTG! Was gonna add....using a few cuss words when attempting this could make it work a bit smoother. ;) Glad you got it out. :)
