I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on the irony of looking for tips toward having a simpler, more peaceful rural living using the internet, which could arguably be called the current culmination of man's technology. A technology that in mosty aspects is being blamed for the current trend of more hectic, less personal and less peaceful living.

I just love the irony............

The beauty of the Internet and TV for that matter, they only intrude as much as you let them. We only watch the TV for the news primarily, don't have cable or satellite. We still use dial-up for Internet and primarily for e-mail except for weather and TBN. We both prefer to read when we have time and always carry a book when we go to the doctor or any place where we might have to wait.

It is unfortunate but modern education is turning off kids from reading.

I would not blame the internet for a hectic and less personal and less peaceful living. It is a source of useful information and allows us here on TBN to invite you into our lives to share the dream of the peaceful living you are seeking.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the computer/internet is what YOU make it.

When I was working (before retirement) I would have agreed with you. But now that I am retired. I find TBN and other sites a very good place to meet some great people. My peaceful living on our 4 arces is as peacful as it was when we moved here 34 years ago.

I think surfing the web is just as beneficial as a book. Most people READ while surfing the net. Since I started surfing I consider it time well spent.

I guess kids listen to music and play games more than adults?

I do agree that the internet is what you make it. I don't think it has detracted from city or rural life, only enhanced the speed of learning. Although the ad companies' tricks and claims on the internet do increase my bloodpressure too often. Having travelled to several other countrys my big concern is the inter-personal skills of our young people and older too, but mostly younger. I work with a lot of computer guys and the youngest of them just plain need stranglin. I don't really blame the internet though. These kids lack social skills bad and I just blame their parents. "Be the parent", I sure hope that catches on!
