Bearing Greasing Question

   / Bearing Greasing Question #21
Today I called the dealer to ask about these "Easy Lube" hubs..Told him I put 10 shots in each assembly. He told me that's too much, and that I would end up with inner seal leakage if I didn't remove some of the grease. After work, I tore down all 4 hubs---He was full of it. I could see some grease being pushed through the inner bearing but not anywhere near enough to cause a pressure situation that could cause a seal leak...There's an hour and a half I'll never get back..Good grief!

Yes, you are right, he is full of it. I literary service 50 to 75 tandem and tri axle trailers twice a year. Thats 200 plus hubs and in 20 years I bet I have had less than 10 seals blow out. Thousands of greasings and maybe 1/2 of 1 % failure.

I have enough grease to get me to the mountains and then some after looking things over and re-packing the outer bearings...These don't have a weep hole but it appears that the grease is designed to leak out around the outer bearing once full, correct?...What I don't like is the fact that you really don't know if you're blowing past the inner seal until the brakes are lost. Looks like the seal is a double lip..Should have snapped a picture.

I never grease the Eze-lube axles. They depend on the rear seal to contain and direct the grease.

If the rear seal blows out the grease is pumped into the brake area of the wheel.

You don't want this ... View attachment 339386

That's what I do with my axles/wheel bearings as well. All my trailers have the EZ lube axles, never had a seal blow out - yet.

Well I had been concerned about my trailer which sat since 2009. I pulled the hubs and "repacked" the bearings (which were all great) and since I've Ez-Lube this thread makes me confident I'm good to go.

Grease does the opposite of what you think to brakes. They will be grabby with grease on them.

You are correct, they push grease out toward the zerk.

remember.. the guys at auto parts stores aren't automatically automotive specialists.. nor are the lowes clerks specialists.. despite what their commercials say. I assume / presume you can spread that around to other professions.. even those that sell trailers.

that's why i do my own maintenance. I don't want the 'specialist' at the quick lube doing my oil.. as he was probably handling french fry oil the week before...

Actually the guy I talked to was in the service department of the trailer dealer where I bought it...A fairly big outfit too.

still don't mean he wasn't changing oil last week, or flipping burgers the week before.

look at (many) teh supt people. they read a darn list and many, at least till you get deep into call transfers, don't know much.. most know LESS than you do when you call in.

True, but it was worth a try...I normally get fairly sound advise from the places I buy stuff from..This just wasn't one of them.
