BCS 725
Hello Everyone,

Thanks for such a great forum! I have really appreciated reading the past discussions about various manufacturers, models, etc...

I've just purchased a used BCS 725 and tiller and the gear shifting is very difficult. I've lubricated the ball bearing that holds the gear level into gear and the location where the gear level attaches to the tractor, but this hasn't helped much, if at all. If I tap the lever with a hammer towards the higher gears the movement seems smoother in the higher range, but once it gets back the 1/3 or lowest neutral location I cannot push it to a higher gear with the gear shift lever.

Any ideas on how to get this working smoothly?

Thanks,

Dave

I found grease with molybdenum disulfide made my early vintage BCS shifters slide much, much easier. This was learned through trial and error. No matter how much non-moly containing grease (lithium grease, etc.) was applied, the shifter ball would not go out of the detent without a lot of force. As soon as the non-moly grease was cleaned off the surfaces and moly grease liberally applied onto the shifter surfaces, the amount of effort needed to move the shift lever immediately decreased.
