I have read quite a bit about battery problems in JD tractors.

My 3320 is a 2006 model....and when I bought it...one of the first things I did was to determine if the battery had been replaced or if it was leaking, etc. Mine APPEARS to be the original battery and all is in good conditon. Am I on borrowed time....and should I replace this (seemingly good) battery soon?

How many with JD tractors have original batteries older than 5 years?

I have never had one last that long. But if yours is not leaking and still works OK then no reason to replace it. Just keep checking for corrosion and not be surprised if one day it just suddenly does not work. You already have your money's worth out of it.

I have never replaced a JD battery because it got old and weak. All mine have worked fine providing instant engine starts up until the moment they died. Every time I was able to trace it to an individual shorted cell in the battery. Of course while they were working I always had to deal with them leaking and causing corrosion. I really helped that issue when I changed to a remote vent system for the battery. Pictures of that are in this thread regarding battery problems: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/154730-3320-300-hour-review.html

Average battery life is 5 to 7 years for most applications.
I always get at least that in my cars and trucks. No so for tractors. Tractor batteries have a hard life what with tilt angles and shock levels.

The original battery in my 4610 lasted 6 years; but then it didn't have to contend with cold weather, nor really hot weather for that matter.

Foggy, there are lots of variables to contend with.

State of charge
Charging voltage, 13.8 to 14.3 v. Never allow the charge voltage to be greater than 14.5 V or it will gas.
Refill with tap water or distilled water. Use Distilled water only.
Sulphation on the plates.

I have been using Charge-it in all my batteries when I first put them into service, a few are getting near 15 yrs old.
