China’s brutal EV war forces BYD to cut starting price for its flagship Tesla Model 3 competitor

Wedbush Securities tech analyst Dan Ives returned from a trip to Asia this month with good news—the brutal war for control over China’s EV looked like it was subsiding as prices bottomed out.

“There is a sense from industry checks within the country and region that many of these price cuts are starting to subside into spring/summer, which is good news for Tesla and the EV industry,” he predicted two weeks ago.

But ‘starting’ may prove to be the operative word as Elon Musk’s arch rival, Chinese EV maker BYD, just lowered the bar to purchase its flagship Seal EV sedan, a contender for 2024 World Car of the Year.

According to a report by motoring website CnEVPost on Monday, the Warren Buffett-backed carmaker cut the asking price by 10,000 yuan to 179,800 yuan ($25,000), a reduction of 5%.

BYD then went on to double that to 20,000 yuan for two of its higher trim Seals. Finally, the top-end version with dual motors for all-wheel drive now retails for 249,800 CNY, or 30,000 less than what was previously asked.

Positioned for more affluent customers, the Seal is one of China’s best bets for conquering western markets. Alongside the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX30, it is one of only three contenders that could drive away with the top prize when the World Car of the Year jury announces their awards at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday.

Tesla Must Give Driver-Assist Demonstration With Every US Sale

(Bloomberg) -- Tesla Inc. staff are now required to install and demonstrate the company’s driver-assistance technology before handing cars over to buyers in North America, a “hard requirement” that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk says will slow deliveries.

Musk instructed employees to perform a “short test ride” with customers to show the system Tesla markets as Full Self-Driving, according to an internal memo seen by Bloomberg News. Workers will also have to perform checks on any vehicles returned from service.

“I know this will slow down the delivery process, but it is nonetheless a hard requirement,” Musk said, citing unfamiliarity with the Tesla system’s capabilities. “This is very important.”

Tesla and Musk didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

The directive shows how Tesla is tightening the reins on technology that is both a significant source of revenue and a magnet for controversy. The automaker has drawn scrutiny over its marketing of features with names such as Full Self-Driving and Autopilot, which could suggest the cars drive themselves despite requiring fully attentive drivers to keep their hands on the wheel.

Musk said in the memo that “almost no one actually realizes how well (supervised) FSD actually works.”

The move could also help justify for buyers the cost of FSD, which Tesla currently sells for $12,000. The company promises in marketing materials that “your car will be able to drive itself almost anywhere with minimal driver intervention and will continuously improve.”

OMG!!! There is at least one poster who will have a heart attack if a POS Kia beats out Tesla for Word Car of the Year award.

But seriously, we are not getting the whole story. Buffet does not make many bad choices and he is riding the BYD horse in this race...not Tesla. Interesting.

Well, he's not always right, just read an article where Berkshire Hathaway bought Stoneco ltd at IPO and it's down 48%. They sold according to the article.

And the $25K savings buys 300K miles of gas at $3.50/gallon!
Except it's 5 seconds slower getting to 60 mph and you have to steer it!

You know. On a public street, you can only accelerate so fast. It's like riding a liter sport bike vs a 600cc sport bike on a public street. Neither will ever see their potential on a public street... But it's a neat flex

Is all about building a straw man "emergency" so dire Capitalism and freedom must be set aside so those who are smarter and more enlightened than the productive masses may rule unhindered.
