Barn to workshop

I jumped on the trusty RootFork and dug in /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif If you notice the rear wheels are light and the front wheels are under a very large load.....

I don't need no stinkin backhoe /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif the roots give way with a bang, but once broke you can pull them by hand. Very brittle stuff.

Roots out and Moved about a yard of soil, you can see where the old level was on the stumps.....

Another shot, If you look in the lower left hand corner of the pic you can see the forks. I bent one last week trying to pry that wedge out of the stump in the pic /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

This is a shot of both inside and out of the North stump. If you look on the inside you can see the how far the roots go in to the barnshop.

This is the South stump, fully a third of the tree was inside the wall. Someone in the past had cut the base beam out from about mid point on the wall. The tree at its widest point outside to inside was 63" across. That's Atticus in the background guarding my jobsite /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Still alot of work to get done but knocked a good chunk out today /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you accounting for the fact that the wood from the stumps left in the ground (after grinding) will eventually decay and leave a ground void? Just wondering if some of the barn foundation is sitting over top of the roots that will not be there in 10 years.

Great pics, and good progress with the big trees. That is a big project, but looks like you have the right equipment for it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Am curious what you meant when you said you were breaking the wedge loose (when you bent a fork). Didn't quite get the mental picture of what that was.

I was thinking the same thing when you mentioned pouring concrete. Depending on what you'll be using the space for will dictate how much strength you'll need.

It might be worth going up a size in rebar and halving the size of your grid. Something like half inch sticks on 12 inch centers should allow you to bridge the area as it decays over the years.

The other option might be to plan on the decay and cracking of the slab and pour it in sections that could be removed and re-poured when the time comes.

beenthere, I have been thinking about it just was'nt sure what I was going to do about it. Eddie has posted a fix which sounds like the way to go since digging all the roots up is not an option.

ahh the wedge, when my tree guy was still here we were whittling down the south stump. he had made a vertical cut and a horizontal cut trying to knock it down a piece at a time. I drove the fork up to pry the piece off, obviously it was still strongly attached /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif The problem with the stumps is that over the years as they have grown they have picked up rocks and dirt in the cavities, we trashed 2 chains getting it where it is now /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Thanks for the kind words......
