I wonder if someone might be good enough to answer a question as related to building a dutch door for my barn stall.

I did find some step by step instruction with a few images so I'll probably follow that method. How to Build Barn Doors - Free Woodworking Plans - Make Barn Doors

However in these instruction, when connecting the 2x6 pieces that make up the frame, it is suggested to "toenail" a couple of 3" screws to hold it together. These 2x6 corners are at a right angle to each other not cut at a 45 degree angle.

I just took a few scrap pieces of 2x6 and tried this method, but it doesn't seem like those 3" screws go very deep. Then if you have a larger frame I worry about the strength. Unless tying in the T1-11 helps.

Could anyone suggest to me methods of connecting this frame together? Would using smaller wood 2x4 be an option? This is a 20 year old barn some mainly we're going for a look as well as a function door.

Thanks for any advice you can pass along.

Jim,

A few alternatives:

1) use longer screws,
2) reinforce the butt-joints with strap ties, or
3) use lap joints rather than butt joints.

Agree with Steve, on these types of doors I've used Lap Joints in the corners, and diagonal bracing inside the frame. pretty sturdy once you get the boards on.

Consider assembling the frame using biscuit joints and glue. I'd also introduce a rebated joint rather than a bevel at the meeting stile of the upper and lower leafs.
