Bats group in colonies.

Some do. Others are more solitary.

Little brown bats form colonies, like open places like a barn to fly in and out of and are migratory. Big brown bats are more solitary and may winter over.

The only person to have ever died from rabies in the state of Massachusetts was bitten by a bat.

I like the bat house idea.

I did some research. Looks like the house should be at least 10' high, situated facing SE, in a location that gets at least 7 hours of sun and near water. I have a location that meets those needs. I'd appreciate any insights based on your experience.

Houses are all over the place on price. Amazon has some in the $40 range. If I go to what I'll describe as "bat enthusiast sites" run over $100. What can I expect to spend for something the bats will be attracted to? I'm thinking 2 chamber to start with. Any guidance here appreciated as well.

Hopefully, putting up a good bat house will cause a relocation from my barn!

There is no need to spend $$$ for a bat house. If you have some spare wood - go on the Internet. There are good plans to build one. They are a very simple build.

Don’t hang on a tree. Putout in the open as much as possible. Bats don’t want to become hawk or other predator food.
