Barbed wire vs Flail

It always amazes me how much junk is left in the fields. I boarded horses and mules on two different places and both had piles of junk lying around, just waiting to nick up the horse's legs.

In 2006, I bought 20 acres that had been pasture for cows and there was old fencing left behind everywhere, covered up in the grass. I THINK I've removed all of it. At least I HOPE I've removed all of it.
Several decades ago the county sheriff came to the saddle club asking for help rounding-up neglected horses running loose in an old junk yard.
He wanted us to rope them for transfer to a recovery place. we all declined, I wasn't about to endanger my roping horse that way.

Old wire is dangerous to animals and a big aggravation to me. I make an attempt to remove all old wire every time I patch a fence.
By law every junk yard is required to accept all types of wire, smooth, barbed, woven, welded, etc. Some don't like it and put up a fuss though.

I suck up wire in my drum mulcher regularly. I carry a set of 10" bolt cutters from HF. Can usually cut it out pretty quick.
That was my first move. Unfortunately, the placement was such that I couldn't get the jaws on that last little bit.

The worst I’ve had is I was tilling out some weeds when I “discovered” a 20’ length on #3 rebar. Completely wrapped it around the shaft. About an hour with an angle grinder to remove.
