I’m a big fan of the self checkouts. It’s foolish to do anything else from a labor standpoint. Anyone in disagreement show your support by selling your tractor and hiring a dozen guys with shovels. When you get done with that just think how many more jobs there would be if we used wagons instead of semi trucks. The self checkout is nothing more than a labor saving device which we already have thousands of. Tractors and semi trucks are only 2 of which.

Ridiculous statement of which there is no similarities or comparisons to be made.

How? It’s almost exactly the same. You have a machine doing the work of several humans being operated by one human. The only difference is one person watches several checkout machines vs one. It’s less effective at saving labor than other machines. They usually have one person watching about 6 machines and each machine probably checks out half as much as a live person.

I wonder how many who won't use self check-out also refused to use self service gas pumps? Did you hold out and use the full service pumps until the end? :)

The ATM cards was another good example I didn't see response to...

I always use a self checkout if available. The less time I spend interacting with other human beings, the happier I am.

Then I am sure you agree the retailer has a right/duty to charge you more for using a credit card.

My understanding is that the contracts with the credit card companies forbid offering a discount for cash or check.

Cash discounts or credit card surcharges are so common I think you are mistaken.

There's a lot of ying and yang on that. Between state law, federal law, card company contracts, lawsuits and settlements, both could be right. What's legal one place may not be in another.

A lot of what?...

Then you have my state which, by law, a retailer can charge extra for using a card, but cannot offer a discount for cash. Never made sense to me why the retailer just couldn't set their prices a little higher and offer a cash discount. The bottom line would be the same either way .:confused3:

I don't know of any full service pumps anywhere any more. If I had the choice at the same price, I probably would as long as I could retain control of my CC. Sure would beat standing out in the cold, wind, rain, snow ....

Why would it be at the same price? Who’s paying the worker to stand there?

The same people paying the clerk to stand inside looking out the window or watching the cameras in case of drive offs.

Who’s going to sell drinks and sandwiches then? And one person might man 2 pumps. The station I use most frequently had 8 gas pumps plus 2 diesel and a no ethanol pump. The one across the road has 16.

My bank is always trying to get me to do all transactions on the ATM.
I usually respond that I'm trying to save that tellers job!

They no longer bother me!

I had a checking account with a regional bank. They opened a new fancy mega-bucks branch. No tellers in person. Only by video the way drive throughs are. I closed that account.

Lowes recently changed their Mail-Order Military Discount Policy.
Thy used to use IDme.com and MyLowes for Military to get not only a Military Discount in the store but on-line too, one up on HD, but they stopped it or at least that is what I was told. If you want the discount you can order the item you want, go to the store to pick it up and ask for the discount. It throws the Customer Service ares in a loop but they do get it done and you get a discount. You need to add 20 minutes OR MORE to the time required but it does happen.

HD does appear to have more of the "Need it Now" items, Lowes all you to go to their Web Site... or they tell you to go to the Local Hardware Store, that carries anything and everything you need, WHAT... I want it now to do my project.

I think most store are doing the same thing, slow moving items aren't stocked any more and the big thing that kills me, not just Lowes and I understand the marketing idea, if the volume of sales in your area for a given item, no matter what it is, isn't high enough they don't stock it; but sometimes you can't even order it... that doesn't go right in my head.

In HD's defense, they do appear to stock the everyday project items that Lowes doesn't.

Not with the MyLowes card, unless something has changed in the last few weeks.

For everyday shopping, Menards gets most of my business of the 3 big box stores. I do use HD more now, going there for better quality brands or hard to find items. But I also find HD online shopping much better than the others. For example, I'm looking for a specific Dewalt saw and a better quality Delta kitchen faucet. HD has them both 'in stock' and has the best prices. But here's the best part... if I order either one by 3:00 pm today, I'll have it tomorrow morning with free shipping via FedEx. I'm in a rural area, and service like that is rare from anyone. That fast free delivery has me hooked, and I find myself looking at their site more and more for those items no one stocks in the stores.

Who goes inside banks?! :anyone:

I can't believe anyone still goes inside the bank. Do you take your discman inside with you?

Reminds me of this...

Yes, I'm joking. But realistically, have not been inside a bank (outside of extenuating circumstances to close accounts) in decades.
