"Home-improvement retailer Lowe's is eliminating thousands of jobs and then outsourcing them as a cost-cutting measure, employees told the Wall Street Journal.

The Mooresville, N.C., chain's action affects two groups of employees: maintenance staff and assemblers who put together products, the employees told the paper.

The employees said they'd be able to reapply for open positions but aren't guaranteed the same hourly wage."

I do just fine without them or home cheapo, both places are chock a block full of Chinese made junk.. I have better things to do than look through a stack of lumber to get 4 straight boards.. They can both go bye bye for all I care..

In other news... thousands of job opportunities at contractors and vendors of Lowe’s.

Good Lord... You can't find anyone working there now...

That's stated as one of the reasons they're moving those maintenance and assembly positions to third party companies. Their employees on the floor will have more time to spend with customers VS maintaining the building and assembling BBQ grills.

"Lowe's cuts store jobs by thousands as it seeks to outsource workers
Hawaii News Now | Thu Aug 01, 2019 20:28 UTC

The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of employees were told this week that their jobs were eliminated, which the company confirmed."

:mad::thumbdown:

Explain how it's a bad move.....

Grow a company, or remain stagnant and fall behind.

While yes, it sucks to lose your job ( I know, it happened to me after 30 years), when you look at it from purely a business standpoint, and take the sentimental and emotional feelings out of it, it makes business sense.

since moving to the farm, I rarely go to lowes or hd.
There are some things my mom and pop store just don't have forcing me to go to Lowes, or HD

My wife had the perfect answer to this news,,
assemblers, and maintenance people need close supervision to function properly,,

The sales assistants that roam the aisles need zero supervision,,

The two do not mix,, Lowes will win by outsourcing the functions that need close supervision,
then, only one type supervisor will be needed,,

I remember back in the late 80's two manufacturing companies in my home town that hired out their maintenance so that's nothing new.

I think it depends on what they are maintaining. If it's janitorial maintenance, then, yes, I agree they need supervision. If it's building maintenance, not so much. I couldn't see more than a couple people to do building maintenance in one of those stores. I'd contract out electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. But you need someone to change lightbulbs, unclog toilets, move racking and such.

I am betting you wife will not have to bid for her old job back at reduced pay.

I work at a hospital. Of all the hospitals in this town I think we are the only one that has employees as housekeeping. All the other hospitals contract out that service. There are pros and cons to both. What Lowes is doing is no different than a hospital going from in-house janitorial to contract. I worked at Lowes and they have made some changes to their store level management structure that are much worse that this.

State or Federal Labor departments could deal with this by requiring that any replacement jobs be at the same pay and benefit scale as those dissolved.

Companies come and go. I thought businesses had the right to manage as they see fit based on the competition I presume. But I'm not a business major nor a political major. Locally our Lowes and HD and Ace Hardware and small hardware stores do a fine job best I can tell.
Cheers,
Mike

What's frustrating is asking for assistance and getting someone who knows less than I do in that department, not a kid either but 40+ year old. A few people are really sharp, but yesterday was a fiasco.
