well, it finally was time to start the project, been thinking about it since last summer.

we have a perfect place for a large patio in the back yard, with the garage forming a
large L and a fence between the garage and house for privacy and wind protection.

found a deal on some close out color Rinox brand pavers, their Belair line, and the
dealer had just enough with a little to spare so i bought the whole lot he had

we started 2 weekends ago, did the excavation and backfilled with layers of
crusher run with compaction every 3 inches. I ended up a little deep in places,
but had extra material so it was ok. better too deep than not deep enough

it took me a long time with a line level (should have rented a transit, but,)
and I graded the patio in 2 directions, sending all runoff out one walkway
to the back yard. when it came to laying the stone dust, 3/4" EMT conduit
was just the ticket, and we compacted the stone dust then screeded it off
between the pipes. So far everything is going well, but we seem to get these
monster rainstorms every few days so i'll be happy when i get the rest of the
patio done (the walls have yet to be built) so i can tamp in the polymeric sand.

I did manage to arrange for some great equipment to use, had a customer drop
off a large JD 328 skid steer to unload the brick pallets, then I borrowed another
JD 320 to excavate with, a neighbor let me borrow their little 1.5 dump wagon,
and i used a JD 3203 tractor to pull that around during excavation and backfill.
that kept the wear and tear down on the lawn areas.
since then, i have been using my little X585 with 45 loader, and gator 4x2 to
move the stone dust. I did use the X585 with front 54 blade to level off the
lifts of crusher run before compacting.

here's a link to my photobucket page with the pictures, and here are a couple
pictures to view on TBN

nice work dutch, looks like the boss agrees w the compactor.....we are currently working a walkway, the stamped concrete guy wanted 5k !! Using a bit larger block, but its coming along, so I appreciate your efforts, your brick work looks great !!!
They make a crushed glass product that works great in between, goes on great and when watered down looks awesome and grass cant grow thru...just a thought

thanks grainger, i already have the polymeric sand here, just waiting to get the
walls up and everything trimmed out...

these bricks are 3 1/8 " thick! and with 8-10 inches of base compacted i don't think
they are going anywhere.

i have a friend that did stampcrete in a small backyard patio, it was ok but not my cup of tea,
i never did get an estimate on this project, but i bet it would approach or exceed 10K,,,,
so if i spend half or a little more i'm happy.

Very Nice. I really like how thick those pavers are!!!

the pavers have different patterns depending on how many of the
large TX blocks are to be mixed in... (14x14).
I had enough to use about 20% of the large squares, but the pattern is
approx 4x5 . i attached a diagram of the install. it goes nice once all the prep
work is done and everything is screeded.

needless to say, all my helpers learned their A, B, C's!
oh and D's

:D

oh and by the way,
this is my first big project since I had both my hips
replaced last October! amazing how much better I feel
than I did a year ago, I would never have attempted it.

I did an 800sq. Ft. Paver patio last year. It was a lot of work, but I saved a ton of money doing it myself. I used 14x14, 7x14 and 7x7. They were Borgert Vavel pavers. I did a random pattern and mixed 2 northshore and mn river colors.

waiting on wall block, so i decided to cut in the trim around the patio (all except around the deck)
rented a wet saw to do the job, came out pretty good, now need the wall block to finish it up!

there is going to be a flower bed with some shrubs over by the garage to break up the siding,
maybe a trelllis style plant...

Looks nice! I like those pavers for patios.

My only nitpick (there's always something ) is under the garage man door threshold, the pavers seem a bit high. If your threshold plate extends out beyond the wall above the pavers, you might want to allow some clearance for frost heave.

dave thanks for the thought...
that threshold is sort of trashed, the door is also. i'll see what happens this winter,
and if it's a problem, i'll pull those bricks next year and lower them a bit... i was more
concerned with pitch away from the garage along with tieing in with the other pavers
on the other side of the fence (not very nice ones)

Standard construction doors aren't very good, and anything else is ridiculously priced.

I think you can get vinyl door trim now. I've seen a lot of rotted door trim with that finger jointed junk wood they use.

update after a rainy saturday, i finally got the block and we started laying them on sunday
i took yesterday off to finish some lower courses, and run some feed wire for landscape
lights we want to put on the wall. once it stops raining and dries up a bit i need to get the
sand vibrated in so we can use the patio for a party Sunday!

had good weather friday nite and saturday all day, and worked out tails off to get
the patio at least usable for a party yesterday on father's day, then it rained and
we had to eat indoors.
but, the polymeric sand is in the pavers, most of the wall is up (not fully finished yet)
and i started overhauling the deck railings, still need to build a new set of stairs
coming down from the deck to the patio (one of the old sets of stairs in place temporarily)
