**** backhoe's are expensive

Some people buy useless RVs. Some people buy expensive cars. Some people buy expensive clothes. Most people waste money in other ways. I値l have a dang backhoe if I want one. And I wouldn稚 give up my dump trucks for a fast car. Don稚 forget about your air hauling pickup truck and the tractor you probably don稚 need to begin with.

Calm down, no one's saying you can't have one. It's your money, spend it as you see fit. The point many here are trying to make is that it doesn't make sense for everyone.

The guys who think a TLB is too expensive, absolutely MUST buy everything NEW!

Maybe it's different where you live, but I haven't had much luck finding used ones that aren't going for almost new prices, don't need $3k worth of repairs or aren't 3 point ones.

Last time I bought a new vehicle was 1971.

The point was it doesn’t have to make sense. If you want a backhoe buy one. How many people hear actually NEED a tractor to begin with. How many people here have at least 10k in stuff they don’t need?

Part of it is what a person is passionate about. I like equipment. I certainly wouldn't suggest anyone owning one, who sees a backhoe as just another tool and is only interested in the jobs getting done. Even if it is not a bad thing to buy financially speaking.

So since some here think I just disappeared I figured I would give an update on my decision and situation.

I decided against a backhoe for the DK40, the used ones are too hard to find with the subframe and I am not into making my open subframe and new subframes for the DK40 are hard to find (called several dealers trying to find one). That lead me to renting a mini (Kubota U35 Mini Excavator) from a local rental (20 mins away) for $200/day. Once I used this for 2 days to dig a sewer line and bury my gutter lines out from the shop and clear a drainage on the land, I knew a mini was the right way to go. So now it's the question to buy or rent. I have just over 100 acres we are building on right now and I can see getting a lot of use out one, but with the rental so close I am not sure buying a used one for $16K-$20K is worth it. I will be retired in the next 8 months and moving down to TN to the house next year, so scheduling to get it won't be an issue and they have several mini's they rent out.

I agree for some it makes sense to buy, even if just because its what they want to do. Some people buy a lot of cars, some equipment, some spend that much just on one vacation, me I love to hunt and ride my Harley, so hunting trips and making mods to the bike is where I spend my disposable income. I don't think there is a right or wrong general answer here after reading all the responses, but the right answer for me right now is to rent a mini. But I will be watching some auctions for a used mini once I retire, just in case I can get a killer deal on one.

Take the $20,000 and throw it into a 12 month cd earning 2.7% (at least my bank is offering those). Than use the $500 to 600 you earn each year to rent one when you need it... :)

Very logical conclusion, kspring.

And your statement should apply to everyone on almost any topic here on TBN. :

I don't think there is a right or wrong general answer here after reading all the responses, but the right answer for me -------
